CS LAN Game - When/Where?
#242
Yahooo!!! Two Days to go!!
Bought my home PC into the office to day to install the network card, run the Defrag and update the AV (as pe NM's suggestion, please make sure your AV Software is uptodate and run a full scan prior to the Saturday).
Also, Do we have a list of alternative MP games we are bringing?
I'll bring the following.
Age of Empieres 2 + Conquers Exp (RTS)
Solder of Fortune (FPS)
Homeworld (RTS)
Fighting Steel (RTS)

I have dedicated servers configured for
C/S - With Stats, on-Line Status, Admin Mod and Bots
U/T
RTCW.
If we want to try another that needs a dedicated server can whoever's bringing find any server faqs, print them and bring with them. Some of the dedicated servers need a bit of tweaking to work in a LAN environment i.e. No internet for Authentication. Otherwise most can just start the server in-game.

If we are playing other games do we need to burn n number of CDs for each PC? Some one mentioned gamecopyworld a few pages back, but when I tried that link it took me to a game selling site (game spot?). Can we do anything else other than burn tons of CDs?
#247
Wow - been gone for a few days and I have to read several pages to catch up on whats happening, thank god I haven't got any work to do
Nimbus - I mentioned www.gamecopyworld.com, that site contains no-cd patches for your games. This allows you to have a backup copy of your game on any PC without the need of the CD in the drive
Homeworld - would love to play that again, It is such a cool LAN games. One time at band camp I had a sesh where it was 2 vs 2. Seeing four motherships with figther escorts fighting it out is so cool

RR, Great, another Homeworld fan Never played this on-line so will look forward to a game.
I've downloaded the bits from the website so we should be able to play this on the LAN.

A mate came down last weekend and I lent him my copy of RTCW without thinking .
I'll be needing a copy of it (haven't even got it installed anymore) sorry.

Fair point Steve. Rest Assured it will primarily be C/S. It looks like we have sufficent number that if a couple want to play something else its shouldn't impact the C/S

LOL @ Roady
Unfortunately I'm not into doing dodgy deals of any kind
Also, I think to get half decent at CS I've relinquished all skill in any other game
I played the Homeworld demo and got completely disorientated.
How about a driving game? are there multiplayer versions of them? Shame we don't have a mario cart type game for the PC

Hi Steve,
It's been a bit difficult lately, with the baby and wife wanting attention Not easy to come in from work at 7:30pm then Play CS from 8pm. Only just gives me time to eat my dinner
I keep looking out for the sessions and will join one of the weekend ones soon. Also, I may be a bit more eger after the pratice I get on Sunday at the LAN game

Folks,
Can someone bring a spare network card + drivers with them on Sunday? I've installed the one I have and although it works (I can access Scoobynet via the LAN), I can not access any other PCs on the network (I wanted to copy some files from my work one). The settings are correct (I think, though I may have missed something) so if someone has a spare card I can try that if I can not get mine to work.
Cheers

Nimbus, I presume you can ping the other PCs and have shared the folders/drives u want to access.
If so, the easiest way to transfer files is start>run then type \\ip address
Does that work?

MS network browsing when you dont have full WINS servers and domain controllers can take ages to settle.
Do wot RR said and use the ip address "net use * \\x.x.x.x\drive_C". if you have NT,2K or XP specify the user as well just to ensure Windows isn't getting confused in the background. (add "/u:nimbus" on the end )

I know exactly where we are playing as I used to work for EDP (pah scum!) but will still meet at JDW's at 9:45. I'll have a look for some net cards but they will probably be only ISA 10MB,

Agggg!
It's Win98SE, so does not recognise the "netuse" command. This is realy doing my head in.. This is what it does/does not do...
I can ping my work PC and it also connectes to the internet via the LAN, so the card must be working.
I can not use DHCP (does not pick up an IP), when I specify an address it still does not see any other PCs (even mine with a shared folder), nor can I see my home PC from my work one, or ping it's static IP.
I've set the network properties as per another Win98 PC.
Maybe the card is faulty? It's pretty old and not been used for a year or two. Would a fault allow some net access but no others? Or is it a setting problem I've overlooked??
If I can not get this sorted out I'm going to sulk all day Sunday.

Nimbus - if you can ping another pc then the card is working fine. Its more down to your setting on your PC.
Have you verified that the PC u want to connect too has a shared folder? is it a works server or just another 98 PC?

We have another Win98 PC in the office and I set my network setting the same (although it's using a different make of card). This PC can see all others OK.
I wanted to connect to a shared folder on my Win2K work PC. But, when I look in the net nabourhood it give me the "entier network" icon, If I click this, I get an error...
Unable to brows the network. Net work is unavailable."
I'll try some more fiddling...
