subaru powered mid engined mrk 6 black escort project

I used to hire mine and it was great. Best if you do that to get some copper electrode bar to custom make some tips at times.
They work well if used properly and will use 240v garage plug etc.
Think MIG/plug welding possibly better esp if using pre galvanised sheet steel as the spot welder at this level has trouble biting trough the zinc at times.
If you plug weld invest in a hole punch, far better than drilling 4mm holes!

The repro panels for the splitty are just plain uncoated steel so no worries there, although they will probably get a blast of weld-thru primer.
I would prefer to do asd much as possible with a spot welder as it minimilises the amount of prep work and repair after welding.
I've got a mig already and acces to arc and TIG thanks to my old man.
Who did you rent the spot welder off mate and how long was it for?
Would it just be for the day or would I be able to get it long term for a month or so?

Hows it going James getting anywhere on the build
Well I started mine up today, after finally completing the intercooler circuit. Surprised me too as as it started on first turn on of the key wasn't expecting that. Have only revved it to about 2.5k-3k, yes the tacho worked too. Only the turbo doing the silencing/muffling, but not too deafening.
Now I have to look through the fault/Diagnostics codes the ECU is giving me. Not sure whether it gives me all at once or if I have to work through them one by one. First one is code 23 for the MAF it seems. May be related to the fact the idle is hunting.
But hey it started !!

Alright Guy!
Looking good i like the intercooler set up, can we get some close up shots..
So it started first time, nice one
I still have not done anything on the escort as im still working on the garage extension, its going to be a nice work shop for me to work on the car.
As for the fault codes they usually all come up straight after each other i think so you have probably only got the one fault.
Keep us updated. James

Nice 911 Graham, just looked at your photo's. What spec is it? The number plate is newer than the shape. You tried the DDK forum?
Afraid my camera's bust James, pic was taken on my pda-phone

I was over at James' this morning having a good look over this project whilst he kindly changed the rad on my GT4. Must say it looks the bollox! He's not far off finishing now, just the exhaust, some brackets for his wheels and a bulk head needs welding in. The rest is cosmetic. All the hard stuff is done, just needs to find the time to do it...
Can't wait for it to be finished, hopefully I'll get a thrash in it too!

Well James, I'm just about at MOT booking point now. Have had to swap in another brake master cylinder and few other mods there to go with it. ATE kindly have a web catalogue with a lot of specification of parts which I trawled through to find suitable (and likely to be cheap) one to use ATE - Index - english
Can't win with the weather though either it's raining or a bit to clammy and hot to work in my single lockup.
Spent today on the wiring, just tapeing it up,clipping it up, and boxing it in. Slow job. Couple more evenings should hopefully have it done. Trying to figure out what to do for the turbo heat, jacket it or just fit heat reflective panels to the underside of the bonnet/clamshell.
Still to fit the remap chip I got from Scott at Polar Performance. Get it MOT'd and check boost as is etc first. Should be "interesting" with 280-300bhp and coming in at under 750kg.

Ok i think its about time for an update..
I have not had much time to work on the car the last year due to moving house and renovating it along with the bloody garden, although i have managed to extend my external garage into a handy work shop to finish off the car, i have finished off the exhaust today, i originally fitted a wastgate splitter and a seperate wastgate pipe but it was way to loud so ive now just routed it back into the exhaust, the loom is now fitted and the engine runs sound as a pound, im using toyota supra alloys as its a cheap way to get wider wheels, 8in fronts and 9inch rear rims, ive made up some 2 piece wheel adaptors at my mates factory out of steel to add a bit of weight at the front and the rear adaptors ive had someone make out of alloy im just waiting for them to arrive.
heres some pics..
This was the first exhaust.
The new exhaust with a metro 6r4 silencer.

A bit more of an update Guys
Ive managed to get quite alot done recently including loads of niggly little jobs, heres some pics..
Ive remounted the filter next to where the perspex window scoop is going to be so it will suck air straight in.
A standard cosworth intercooler fitted nice, this will be upgraded later on if needed.
I set about the roof with the grinder and welded some end plates on, it turned out pretty dam good.
Ive cut a big hole in the tailgate to let the heat out, im thinking i might put some mesh on there painted black. (proper group style)
