The car is based on mrk 6 escort and is going to be mid engined with rear wheel drive,so far ive stripped the car down to pritty much a bare shell and layed the complete subframe down to se how it looks.

Most interesting.
Should be a snip bar the gear linkage which will be a tease.
Could bring a new meaning to 4 wheel steering.
(the Honda Preludes had 2 racks)

i havnt got a clue how its going to handle but hopefully i will be able to source some suitable front suspension , the engine is going to be right behind the two front seats so i think there will be quite a bit of weight on the front to especially under breaking.

Blimey that's a big project you've bitten off there - good luck nailing that together. Will certainly confuse a few Ford fans when you open the hood

When I sold it (where is it now?) it was 1987, I was 35 and to be honest the Hot Rod world seemed to be tatty-heads pratting about, and I felt too old to be doing such things.

20 years later it seems to have come full circle! All the Old Skool stuff and a pleasure to see real hotrods in Custom Car mag etc (which i still buy).

I could go on but this isn't my thread, but very nice to be in touch with Hot Rodders on here.

I really do miss them to be honest.

How about running the shifter rods below the engine, past the sump to the box? That cable shift does look good, just wonder how 'wooly' it might feel?

With the right springs the front end will behave fine, and i guess you have a good chance of getting about 50/50 distribution as the fuel tank will need to go in the front as in a 911. Battery can stay in the front.

I'm a bit surprised you say the engine is right behind the seats.

Cable drives to the box are popular on modern cars, good when adjusted/maintained well.

Any chassis progress rentonone?

How about using an mr2 gearlever as a basis, as they are cable shift aswell, and obviously rear engined.

i was thinking that too mate, heres a pic of one, i think this will be easier to rig up than a solid mechanism.

As you can see by this pic, the subframe is to short to bollt on to the escort chassis so im going to extend and modify it so the subfame will bolt on properly.

I am going to cut out the chassis rail that runs across the top of the subframe in the pic as soon as ive fitted a temporary strengthening bar just in case it all decides to twist.

ive fitted it together with the standard front scooby shocks without the springs and with the escort top mouns, the shocks are a bit close to the body but coilovers would be perfect so i need to get hold a pair.
the centres of the shock towers on the escort are about 30mm wider than the centres of the subaru front shock towers but im thinking i might be able to make up the difference with camber bolts, if not i will have to modify the towers.

That looks an easy installation from here. A tube loop to pickup the wishbone bush will work.
Does the bush hang a bit low behind the wheel? I know you can't change the height.

The wisbone bushes sit about the same heigth as the floor of the car so its worked out ok, it just looks low on the pics, im planning on making a frame work out of 2 or 3 inch box section to mount the wishbones to, what do you mean by a tube loop Graham? im open to ideas;). i could do someone measuring the centres of the wishbone bolts for me next time your underneath the car so i can get it spot on.

You are following me exactly. My tube mount would be a wide 'U' shape with tabs welded to pickup the 2 suspension mountings. Box tube is easier to use (I used box in all my hot rod fabrications in the past)

Weld to the car's rear legs both sides and the tube would pass under the box, pick the suspension up and also double as the gearbox support.
Critical here is alignment to all the locations and strength of joining the custome tube frame to the thin sheet metal Escort.

I can sketch is all quicker than write it down.

As a bit of fun I might sketch out the '911' way i would do this install and post for you all to have a go at. :D

I am looking to use MR2 gearchange components, trouble is every time I go to the scrapyard they always seem to put the MR2's on the wobbliest pile of cars :)

im just waiting to get some box section now and im either going to buy a mig welder or hire one as funds are low at the moment as ive just brought a house, the good news is that the house has a garage with a pit i carnt belive my luck, lol

yes Guy this is my project that ive been keeping quiet until i had all the bits, im still waiting for the kit to convert the box to 2wd to arrive. ive got plenty of work to do though before for it gets here. Hows your project going?

My projects slow!!
Just taking a break now from working out the wiring I need, and pinouts from the ECU. Can find diagrams for various early JDM WRX's but of course not exactly what I need (late 93/early94 WRX with W6 ECU) so slight deviances to fathom out.

im having trouble with my loom too, ive got no keys or transponder so i dont know how im going to get past the imobilizer, 'ticky' (Az) has been helping me out.
all the runing gear is 98 uk spec.. heres my post..

Just a thought how do yo plan to get air to the intercooler or are you going to go front mount? thats gonna be some pipe run if you go front mount
could run a scoop on the roof like a snorkle system watching with interest

I dont think im going to go front mount as its to much piping, ive been thinking about a rear mount or mount it flat in the boot floor somewhere as its all open, i could fit twin fans to help draw the air through, once the engine and box is all bolted in i will be able to get a better idea of places to mount the ic.

just a thought but youn could mount the intercooler in the spare wheel well if you modify the shape of the well and you could duct air from underneath the car like is done in some high powered mr2 turbos

i havnt got a spare wheel well mate its just a gaping hole,i know what you mean about ducting air to it though, that would work. this is going to be the fun part. :)

This would probably be a better solution and like you say it would reduce lag.
