Can anyone explain the potential security risks of using these sorts of BitTorrent sites and associated software? I'm assuming that opening up my computer ports for all to look at has some potential drawbacks.

set up corretly, security wise there shouldn't be too many problems, best to open a port high up in the range i.e. 52344 and one that is unknown. The torrent service running on that port would be open for people to connect to however but its unlikely they could compromise your machine through that.

Best to always connect to the net through a hardware firewall and forward only the ports that you need to the machine, this would mean other connection attempts to different services on the machine would be rejected by default providing a good first line of security

but and its quite a big but, BayTSP | Digital Tracking + Security + Protection some files carry a higher risk than others if you are sharing them

Hacking wise there is very little risk, the bigger risk is using public torrent sites that get monitored !! The best way to do it, is to join a private torrent site TorrentLeech.org
