Type R Or P1
Given the choice between a MY99/00 Type R or a similar P1, I would probably take the P1. I am currently the owner of a V5 Type R and think its the best thing since sliced bread. However in all honesty I bought it over the P1 due to price, nothing else. Not that I regret it or anything, when I see a P1 I have mutual respect for I dont feel in any way superior or inferior.

Seriously though, you hit the nail on the head there. You buy a car to enjoy it, not worry about what other people think.
I think it depends on the person and there driving style etc.. i test drove both a P1 and a STI version 5 Type R and in the end it seemed the Type R had the edge over the P1 and for whatever reason seemed a little quicker. To end a long story i eneded up with the Type R, but everyone is different.
power distribution on a P1 is front : rear 60 :40, so understeery on track but safe on the road. the TYPE R gets rid of this understeer if you can use the DCCD properly...
BUT ID TAKE TYPE R ANY-DAY M8

the 60/40 is right
i have a P1, and to be honest even if the type-r was just the better car, i'd buy the P1 every time over and over
is a 22b worth 15k more than a P1???? i dont think so

With the Type-r and the P1 so closely matched on paper don't you think that in the real world it comes down to the skill of the driver to extract the most of the cars performance from it? Arguing about a few 10ths of a second difference in a 0-60 time is nothing, it's all to do with the launch, the correct revs and gearchanges etc. If you saw a Type-r and a P1 sat at the lights would you really bet your morgage on one or the other????

Say you were a car manufacturer, who had a great layout and drivetrain for road conditions, but wanted to improve, say, the traction, or acceleration, there are a few changes they could make. They might give you a plated rather than viscous diff in the centre, and perhaps let you control the amount of lock too. They also might shorten the gears, and for strength, beef up the hubs and driveshafts.
Look... it may SEEM ****, but apart from the statistical differences, the type r/ra's FEEL much faster, and not all that is illusion, and it is DEFINITELY not pub talk, because feel is what is the most (and probably only) important thing. It is, however, disingenuous to suggest that these two models are identical in performance. Similar yes, but in all honesty, my Type r is similar in performance to my old UK turbo too.
The bottom line is that these changes were not idly made, they were meant to improve the car, make it faster and make it handle better, and this might be a newsflash to some, but THEY DO

Of course, those changes might actually not be to your taste, in which case the P1 might be the perfect car for you, but I must admit I'd feel terribly sorry for the scores of STI engineers who spent ages perfecting and improving the breed only to be pooh-poohed because they could only improve an already superb car by a little bit.
At the end of the day, the right car for you is the car you prefer to drive, but we're all doing a disservice to people who come here looking for advice if we pretend that these two models are the same, or even practically the same.
If someone directly asks the question, which is faster, cannot we just tell the truth without hurting people's feelings? True, it's not night and day (not even night and dusk), but there is an answer that doesn't need several pages of arguing (however much fun it is) to establish.

The P1 is the car that will be the fastest car in 90% of drivers hands, the typeR will be the faster car for the other 10%, I'll say now I'm part of the 90%. The P1 is better set up with suspension and the power split than the typeR for our A&B roads, the better car with taller gearing for the motorway. You really have to be a very good driver to get the best out of the 64-36 power split in the typeR, many kid themselves that they are that good but in reality most aren't.

The rumours about it being an unruly beast are not true though

It has a different character, that is all.
Really, that is not my point though.
If you went to a Lotus forum, and asked what was the fastest car, a 111R or an Exige, you would be pretty annoyed if you came away with the impression that they were exactly the same, simply because they had the same engine and the same power.
For similar reasons, in many (most?) people's hands, the Elise may be as fast/faster on difficult, give or take roads, but ultimately, it is not as "fast"
