i have just been to the Wolfsburg factory and seen one of these "in the flesh as it were" for the first time. I'd have one if i had the money for one, they look like a superb spec'd luxury motor to me,.

Luxury barge though Deep, not something to be chuckable but more of a motorway cruiser.

Anyone got an idea of NCAP safety ratings ???

Hasn't been tested - I think the volume is too low. I'm quite sure it would score 4-5 stars for the occupants though

Sure, but what I mean is slower than an AMG or similar which is also a luxury cruiser. Does seem like a hell of alot of car for the money, ticks most of the boxes for me, if only it was little faster ie 0-60 in 5.5 0-100 12s

2 VR6s slapped together. They are very narrow angled banks just like the VR6, and there are only four cams

A sales rep who pops in has one, its only a V6 though. Very undistinguised, but classy, big car too, bigger than a 7 series BMW.

I have a hankering for a Passat W8, 'cos I'm a cheapskate and they really are bargain buckets

to put it in the same box as a Passat is a bit off:

The Phaeton was the brainchild of Volkswagen chairman Ferdinand Piëch, who perceived the addition of such a flagship as a means to burnish the Volkswagen brand. The decision to release the Phaeton was, in part, a response to Mercedes' decision to compete directly with VW in the low end A-Class marketplace in europe.

The Phaeton's platform, the D3 platform, is shared with the Audi A8, Bentley Continental GT and Bentley Continental Flying Spur. D3 platform is constructed from high strength steel while Audi A8 is made in a different factory, on a different platform, using an aluminium space frame. This choice of metal is for reducing the production cost as to make Phaeton about 20% cheaper than comparable rival vehicles.

As of 2005, the Phaeton has the longest wheelbase in the Volkswagen passenger line.

The Phaeton is hand-assembled in a distinctive factory with a glass exterior, the Gläserne Manufaktur in Dresden, Germany. This factory also assembled the Bentley Continental Flying Spur until October 2006, when assembly of the Bentley was transferred to Crewe, England.
I see quite a few of these rolling round Chicago, and wouldn't mind getting myself one (not very likely) - they stand apart from the many BMW 7 series, and Merc S Class you see. I recall the Top Gear feature on this talked about just how **** VW were when they designed this, it was essentially a VW 'showboat' signed off by Ferdinand Piëch.

I am sure its not everyone's wet dream (its not mine either!) but its 'the list' for me.
