I wouldn't class ronaldinho and maradona as strikers.

Romario could well be the best 1 v 1 finisher

and shearer did that at Newcastle, who some on here have said are a crap side, just goes to show what a great player he was. just remember the amount of time he had out with serious injuries that would have finished a lesser player. thats why he is a legend and the greatest center forward of the modern game, end of

Would have to push for henrik Larsson. Hate Celtic but the guy was outstanding. Proved his class by going to Barca and basically winning them the CL as a substitute. Now ManU want him at 35 years old!!
Only one I would put up there also is Ronaldo. Rush was superb but couldn't cut it in Italy.

yeah but if he was playing for one the fashionable sides like barca, millan, juve etc he would have won it and probably more than once! sti all you seem to remember is his latter days at Newcastle, at his peak he was the most complete striker, he could shoot with both feet, had pace, strength, good in the air, could take set peaces(quite good on the penalty spot ) and you ALWAYS got 100% out of him, not like fat ronaldo.

Then you're remembering the wrong Ronaldo. He had all that you mention plus better technical skill and more skill running with the ball.

In years to come Shearer will be remembered on these shores only where as Ronaldo will be remembered worldwide.

He was outstanding in the 98 WC finals (The final he should never have played), 2002 he scored 8 goals as Brazil won it and in 2006 he became the top scorer of all time in the finals.

Career Record (all comps):

Alan Shearer 692 games 365 goals

thats better than a goal every other game, don't know what ronaldos is but it can't be much better, if it even is? the thing with shearer is, he wasn't a fancy dan, just a no nonsense player.
as alex ferguson said there never be anyone like him again, says something if the great man ure tried and failed to sign him twice?

Gary Lineker.

Only just makes it in the timescale - but if everyone else in the game played like Lineker did Football would be a better game .

Diving has ruined pretty much every other name in this thread so far (Possibly except Alan Shearer)

yeah he was far too busy throwing his elbows about and booting people up in the air to have the time to dive, know what you mean though Jasey a very sad indictment of todays game.

No record to speak of in the Champs League and did very little at World Cups. Yes he has a great record in the Prem but you cant compare that to Ronaldos record IMHO

246 goals in 373 games = 0.66 gpg ratio.

You kidding? Once he legs went he spent the next 5 years backing into a player then dropping to the floor.

his international record is pretty good also. 63 caps and 30 goals. fair enough you've got me on champions league

don't get me wrong i agree that ronaldo is probably up there but he's always been playing along side other world class players in the best sides, that's why i think shearer stands out.

another player to throw into the mix that has'nt been mentioned is Michael Owen, was pretty out standing for Liverpool and England over the last 8 years or so.

Owen is to one dimensional IMHO, but a great finisher, whereas Robbie Fowler had it all until money and injuries ruined him.

The thread topic asks who is the best striker in the last 20 years

In my opinion - ALAN SHEARER !!!!

Back in his glory days - the mid to late 90's, he was unquestionably the best striker in the World. Consistently scoring 30 league goals a season and the majority of his goals were fantastic - he had bravery, determination and sheer skill for a striker that made others fall by the wayside.

He was also top scorer in Euro 96 - and that was after a goal drought for England - but Captain Marvel came to the rescue and England made it to the semi's.

He may not have won the Euro/ World player of the year and I believe that was due to lack of European Cup/ Champions League appearances.

Alan Shearer Compilation - Google Video

And finally - I think the facts below say it all

Honours in Football
FA Premier League Winner: 1994-95 (Blackburn Rovers)
FA Premier League Runner up: 1993-94 (Blackburn Rovers), 1996-97 (Newcastle United)
FA Cup Runner up: 1998, 1999 (Newcastle United)
Intertoto Cup Runner up: 2001 (Newcastle United)
Le Tournoi Winner: 1997 (England)
Euro 96 Golden Boot Winner: 5 Goals
In the awards to mark 10 seasons of the FA Premier League, Alan Shearer was named as: Overall Player of the Decade, Domestic Player of the Decade, Outstanding Contribution to the FA Premier League and Top Goalscorer.
In recognition of Shearer's contribution to both English domestic and national football he was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2004.
Listed on the FIFA 100 list of "greatest living footballers".
Highest ever Premiership goalscorer: 260 goals
Most Overall Goals Scored for Newcastle United: 206
Most European Goals for Newcastle United: 30
Top Scorer for club: 1994-95, 1995-96, 1996-97, 1998-99, 1999-00, 2000-01, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06

Alan Shearer is a true footballing icon - a real professional - he turned down the chance of playing for Man Utd to play for the club he loved all his life - Newcastle (just a pity he left Rovers... but then he was then and is still known to Rovers fans as GOD - )

Your right, the facts do speak for themselves, hes won the prem once and the FA Cup once. Theyre the only real awards apart from the Euro96 golden boot award that are worth mentioning.

Definately not Shearer IMO.
