I don't listen to you lot .

Besides - I stumbled across it when looking at Serie A scorers etc and just thought this guy stood out - possibly the greatest striker of all time - approaching a goal a game.

And for Sweden 43 goals in 33 appearances

Mind you they were probably playing crap teams like Engerland

My list of candidates are:

Maradonna
Henry
Ronaldo
Lineker
Shearer
Baggio

Saying that, I reckon Rooney will one day be crowned "worlds best ever player"

I can't believe we're five pages in and Paul hasn't mentioned Zola? Easily the best striker they've had in my lifetime! I bet they wish they still had him now

I reckon his ratio of spectaclar goals to 'normal' goals is definitely higher than any of the others:

But Dion Dublin must run him a close second in the striker in a **** team stakes though, remember how rapidly Coventry plummetted when he left

There is only player that you've all seemed to have forgotten. Yes you've all named the goal hangers and their record speaks for themselves. I'm sure I could have played up front for Man Utd and been successful when Beckham was on top of his game. But I think a striker needs to be more of a team player and assists just as much as he scores. Oh yes the goals need to be spectacular.

Just cast your mind back to World Cup 1998. England knocked out by a bunch of cry babies. In the next round they faced this player who scored what I believe to be the best goal ever.
To me he is the best player and person ever to play in this country. He was never linked to Barcelona, he was always loyal to the fans and to me He is God

Have you guessed who it is yet?

Yes I am a Gooner.

See the second line of post #44

The goal (great as it was) you are talking about surely can only be the viewed as the second best ever, by any true England fan

Euro 98 - Gascoigne over Hendrie and into the back of the net is in fact the best

He was hardly a prolific striker though. amazing Number 10 but not a number 9 (in old money)

Scored some awsome goals but as STi says he didnt have a brilliant ratio of goals, more of a second striker than a goal poacher but you already know that

Its hard to judge strikers from different national leagues, lets face it, how do you honestly think Ronaldo et all would have coped with the week in week out rough and tumble of the English leagues, likewise, with the slower pace of the continental leagues, how do you think the likes of Shearer etc would get on with more time ???

Henry is a real good player, but a striker? A striker to me is someone like Rush and Shearer who consistently get on the end of anything that gets in and around the box, they scrap hard and work hard and often get the goals

I’m not doubting the abilities of Ronaldo, Henry, etc but I don’t think they fit my criteria for being a striker, Rush, Lineker and Shearer do.

My vote = Shearer
