Possibly not his best pic...
Because he wasn't very good?

The picture is of how he will always be remembered

Its a choice between Shearer and Klinnsman

Van Basten would have been up there had he played for longer i'm sure if we want to vote a player from the club we support i'm going to have to vote for Lee Chapman as my options are limited

koeman was a defender (whoops) but he took a lot of pens and free kicks

shearer cant stick him

he always had is back to goal rippin a shirt off the defender then flops to the floor pen one goal scored
maybe we should regionalise it then

london village = henry
west midlands = bully

north west = cantona/ian rush

scotland = larsson

wales = errrhhhhhhhh mmmmmmm
europe = raul

r of world ronaldinho

For short spells others have been better (many others) but for consistency shearer is surely the only choice.

Ronaldo for example was a better finisher and a more devastating individual player for a few seasons but in this century he's been sporadic.

If you mean who's been the best player in a single season in the last 20 years then that would be Ronaldo circa 1997 imo.
consitency hmmm...the only player to score more than 20 goals a season in the prem for 4 years running was henry (should be 5 yrs after this year)

oh and did someone mention andy cole? my ribs are hurting me

I wasn't saying he didn't, someone said he goes missing, someone said he does. I asked for backup. I still think he's had some rotten big games but then no player plays their best every match.

If Henry plays another 5 years at the same level of performance then he'll overtake shearer but at the moment it's still shearer for consistency for me.

If it wasn't for injuries and a lack of workrate it would be Ronaldo surely tho

Cool

From my own team, Ian Rush: without question, followed closely by Robbie

Overall Dennis Begkamp has to be right up there for me, some of the things he could do with a football defied belief:eek

That would be Mark Hughes then, you muppet

Always hated him for some reason, but that might just be because of the number of goals he scored against us, or the delight he took in scoring them But taking of the rose-tinted's for a moment I can't deny that he was a great player

Cantona was always a pleasure to watch.

Mark Hughes was without doubt the best player with his back to goal.

Rush was THE poacher

Wrighty too

Shearer undeniable

Personally I would give it to Cantona simply because he was exciting. The best poacher was Rush.

Ronaldo. At his peak he had everything. Strong, quick, skillfull, cool head, best 1 v 1 finsher I've seen, Leading goalscorer in the World Cup. Shearer is not a patch on Ronaldo.

Id have to go with Andy Ritchie, best striker never to have played for England IMO.

Cant deny Cantona's contribution when he wasnt practicing kung fu.

Exclamation

Some interesting career stats (all league, CL and Int'l) :

Ruud Van Nistelrooy 0.608 goals per game
Thierry Henry 0.504 gpg
Alan Shearer 0.51 gpg

Can't be botherd to look up others, apart from two interesting ones from history

Brian Clough 0.916 gpg and Puskas 0.985 gpg!!

I think right now Nistelroy is the best in the world.

But Shearer is the best for doing it over a long period of time. If he would have been in a better side and had more oppertunities he would have been even better! I think it's a farce the caliber of the man and he has hardly any medals to show for it

Gutted he never came to OT

why? United did perfectly well without him. He should have gone to a big club if he had any ambition.

My short list

Henry
Shevchenko (before he turned ****e)
Van Basten
Ruud
Wrighty
Rush
Dalgleish
Shearer
Larsson
Cantona

The best for continued high level performance season after season has to be the FA's biatch for many years, Alan "I sing like a laydee and those nasty rumours just aren't true girlfriend" Shearer.

Shearer was always crap in Europe with Newcastle. You cant conclude your statement. Had United been short of strikers who failed to perform then it may add some weight to your arguement but as it is United have never struggled to score goals over the period Shearer was prolific.

shearer
romario (who i think is about 12-14 goals short of 1000 career goals)
ian rush
van basten
all of them came up with the goods year after year

if henry can keep it up for another 3 or 4 years then he'll be in there
same with ronaldinho

no one has mentioned Roberto Baggio

1 of only 5 players to score 200 or more league goals in Italy
