You can actually make it weaker I have been told.
Weld an inch miss an inch.. that will change to weld a panel miss a panel by the end!

Graham, the tips I was given came from the guys who fitted the cage to the Power Station car and also Prep'd Andy Cookson's. They were telling me of their experiments over the years on what did and didn't work.
Weld an inch miss an inch was the order of the day and don't go forward (front end) or aft (rear end) of the strut towers.
Neil, when you do the bulkhead to floor seam you need to do both sides btw, under the car an inside for it to be really effective, although just the indise makes a pretty big difference I'm told

Body flex is a strange thing, and interesting comments Tim, thanks.
When i fitted my 6 point in the 911 splits showed after 3 years where none were before, nothing huge at all, but the centre section of the coupe shell were obviously stiffer now with the cage and all the strain of hillclimbing with rock-hard suspension was flexing through a smaller construction rather than the shell as a whole. This was with a bolt-in cage...

nas: A quick sketch of what you asked for.
I will leave you to tell them the pipe diameters by giving them the original parts. Any decent fabricator will work this way.
I have assumed you will keep the fuse box as is (the one next to the battery)
Hope this is ok!
TinyPic Video and Photo Sharing
If you like i can fax it to you from work tomorrow, pm the number if you want tonight.
Graham
Why has Tinypic suddenly changed all the way they used to do things? All my pics come across to large now

great drawings them graham but i think i have sent you the wrong info (due to stella)
i was after the washer bottle and the overflow tank for the rad (the 1 that sits in the inner wing . basically i wanted them as 1 unit roughly about the size of a battery , fitted where the battery normally is . i,ll add a pic to the post for a rough idea graham
sorry to mess you about

Agree with the 'stich' weld thing, do an inch, miss an inch or so etc.
Rally cars I've seen being prepared do this. Apparently it is better for strength in an impact as it gives a degree of movement, dissapating the energy I suppose.

I wouldnt bother too much on the inside and bulkhead, if welded properly you get penetration through the metal and into the car

I believe the thinking behind stich welding is to increase overall stiffness without changing the relative flexibilities of one part of the structure over another. As has been mentioned, if you stuff the front end you really want it to crumple and not transfer all that energy into the shell which is where you are. IIRC Possum Bourne's co-driver (Roger Freeth) died from internal injuries because his body was less able to cope with a severe impact than the car's shell was
An interesting thread

well decided today i want the car 100% right so the weld is being taken out from after the front struts to the front panel , i am changing the full front panel anyway due to being slightly bent , and hopefully neil at eclipse will sort the welding on the inner wings and chasis if the panels need replacing they will be .
