Petters comments sums it up really
Being honest I'd prefer the old rules.
What is the point of having cars that resemble their road going counterparts but are actually nothing remotely like the road going version? They may as well go whole hog and not bother keeping the body as little else original remains.
Sure the marketing men will love the brand association, but any petrol head with a clue will never be fooled. But then that wouldn't bother them[marketing men] as they are aiming towards Joe Blogs with 2.5 kids that know eff all except which side the fuel filler cap is.
Like the old ETC (Eurpoean touring cars - for those who can't remember). The 635csi WAS a 635Csi. The Jag XJ-S (or Broadspeed XJ-12
) was an XJ-S. Cars you could actually own and were mechanically similar. Just like anybody could own a production Escort RS Cosworth which still had the huge turbo and water injection pumps in the boot. Or the Sierra Cosworth with the provision for 8 fuel injectors. Something you would never get in todays rallying, shame.
I'd rather WRC die with a single true homologation car that actually was in production and had some resemblance to the competing car, than load a complete one offs not available to the public that has barely any mechanical resemblance to the road going counterpart (if any).

From Prodrive themselves when we asked the a couple of weeks ago on the tour -
The thing that has made things difficult for us this year is the banning of active differentials. It is taking us a lot of time to get back what we have lost.....

I wonder what rule they will bring in when the 07/08 WRC car comes out and whoops their little French bottoms

French rule No. 69 no cars can compete in WRC if their road going Cars have a Turbo or 4WD fitted as Standard.
IMHO
