Marcus

Please allow me to congratulate you on starting an excellent thread. I certainly wouldn't have the audacity to pose such a question.

Surprisingly it is one of the few that has been warmly received. No abuse or sarcasm, just a group of people outlining the reasons they made sacrifices (or in some cases didn't) to own a Scoob. No tantrums, inflated egos or schoolboy like bragging. It's true! I've pinched myself to make sure.

As far as I'm concerned these stories can continue to run, and so children:-

Many years ago a princess kissed a frog. He took her in his arms and transported her to a mystical land called Warrender. They sought the renowned RS 2000 4x4 (sorry I've now found the path of righteousness and truth). When they arrived a wicked witch had cast a spell on the salesman and it had been taken by a man from Yorkshire. The Princess was offered a McRae Scoob. She liked this but thought the interior unsuited to one with royal heritage and befitting only the plebeian hoard. The couple searched throughout the kingdom for a carriage eventually selecting an inferior unit, which whilst reliable did not stimulate the prince or attract the adoration of the village peasants.

Years passed and a new carriage was needed. The Princess scoured the kingdoms of Lord Lexus, Baron BMW and Viscount Volvo to no avail. Down heated and dejected she returned to her castle overlooking the golden triangle and fell into a restless sleep. She was awakened from her slumbers by a messenger. He had travelled far on gravel tracks and through dark forests accompanied a solitary companion. A squire, who had served his master well offering guidance and reassurance when presented with challenge or danger.

With more than 300 dirty mud splattered horses they brought remarkable news. The peasants in and around the village of West Bromwich testified to a new and exciting phenomenon. A carriage had been seen, and whilst not luxurious, would protect her from the excessive heat of summer and caress her hips within alcantara seats. The Princess immediately despatched her scouts to the shire of Worcester where they came upon one such a remarkable carriage.

Her most able champion was sent to confront the wizened guardian of this carriage. After days of ferocious financial battle with the guardian and his dragons he returned drained and exhausted. However victory had been secured and he made his way home with a most highly prized blue carriage. The princes was now contented. Knowing that there were only 323 similar carrriages she was encompassed by a Lister-ine ring of confidence.

And they all lived happily ever after.

Lets' just say that last year my total expenditure on my Scoob, not including the costs of the track events themselves or any mods (so payments, petrol, servicing, insurance, consumables, etc) was about £20k!
BUT, I bought the Scoob knowing I wanted to go on track and it HAD a reasonable warranty (thankfully!).
With hindsight, I would probably have bought a diesel car as well to use for work, which would halve my servicing and petrol costs as 1,000 miles a week certainly isn't helping matters!
Besides, I don't have children, so for me the Scoob is really what I work for. I'm sure things would be different otherwise, but I've no plans for kids for a few years yet.
Roll on Donno!

Stef.

Markus, I guess I should join in the fun, and A) congratulate you on a great thread, and b) share with you my sordid details.

Firstly, I'm 31 (amazing how many people on the board of this age...), and work as a financial sales manager, yes, it pays quite well (although like many others here it also involves a lot of hours / study etc), however, I'm also chained with 3 small people, and large mortgage which reduces my income somewhat !

Carwise, always loved cars from the age of 5 or 6 when I used to watch Barry Lee / George Polley / Mick Collard in the National Hot Rods, and my love has grown and grown ever since. Started life with a Dolly Sprint, then Viva, Capri (2.1), Fiesta, Orion, Sunny (zx)Pug 309 GTI, Ren Laguna, Clio, Escort (sorry !), 911, Disco, Vectra (2.5), and finally....My gorgeous Type RA. (I've excluded from this list about 6 different company hacks too !).

The scoob is the only car I've really enjoyed out of that lot apart from my Pug (Markus, you may have seen it around TW, Miami Blue - very rare on the 309). I paid cash for my Scoob after cashing in an investment as I needed to provide a car for a new job...which I then didn't take !

...and as you will know, the scoob is for sale as I need to hand half the cash to Mr Polley to build me a Hot Rod ! So there you go, full circle, back to my roots, and hoping to hit the track for next seasons HR Southern champ at Arlington.

One snag tho....can't sell Scoob !

Glenn

Rich, thanks.
Sadman's on the right line, DDC syndrome.(dregs of the drinks cabinet). Started with a Glen Galwan, no prob. It's the Martinique Brandy that addled my brain cell.
Thought it was really witty yesterday

See you're from a land Scoobys were made for .. lucky sod .

Cheers, hic

Another contractor (for 11 years), but since gone permie!

MY98 was bought originally under finance (6k deposit) but the following year I paid off the debt to make the books balance a bit. Transfered ownership as part of shuting the company down after I took a (good) permanent position so I only have running costs to worry about.

Here's my 2p's worth:

IT Manager, 35k pa. Saved for a year (just to show my dedication!) and got a loan for 8k to buy my 97MY UK wagon for 13.7k cash in a private sale. Sold my old 91 Rover 416GSI for just enough to get air-con fitted, and now I'm just scraping enough together each month to keep my baby on the road and still afford holidays

Steve

PS. This is the first car I've owned which:
a) cost more than 4k
b) was less than 5 years old when I bought it
c) scares me witless everytime I boot it in 2nd gear

Having accrued several money making enterprises netting me in excess of £20k a week, I didn't give any thought in taking my 1200 miler STi version 6 costing circa £25k on the track at Silverstone and thrashing it, even though it was a first and I told people that " yeah mate I'm gonna just take it easy" bo**ocks...live life to the max....I always spend more than I've got making damn sure I earn more than I spend !

Top thread!

I'm 29 and own my own expanding biz (well respected 5 year old company in the e-commerce sector). I'm the mug who pays all the IT contractors their stupid rates so I don't have any left for myself!!

Scoob was paid for with 4 (count em) years of saving and a 7k loan. Love it though.

Oh, and if any seriously good IT bods want to work for my company (web developers, e-commerce consultants, permanent, based in the Midlands and I may open another office in London next year) then email me!

Just thought I'd hijack the thread there for some personal gain :-)

Blimey! did not expect this much traffic on my little thread, thought it'd be a lot of abuse.

Thanks to all who've posted on here.

Ian Sutton, was I chicken? well, maybe beforhand but not now. I've got the track bug after being out with Kim and Dom and as such the black beast will be on track next time. Where? well I don't know, probably next year though.

Anyway. Thanks to all. Please keep posting if you want.
