I was wondering if maybe the brakes off a GTI6 would fit OK, but would have to upsize the wheel probably, so gain in one area to loose in another

TBH I rarely brake at all anyway when the bends come up

i thought the wheels on the GTI were 15's???
GTI-6 wheels are 15's so i dont really see the problem, a little wider but many do not have a problem with this.
get over to the rallye register or PGAC and have a mooch about in there forums, im sure you will find all you need to know

I had 2 106 GTis in my past. They are great fun to drive when they work, but reliability is not that good.
Sunroofs eat into headroom so make sure you fit inside the car with one installed if you are after one.
The standard brakes are OK only if you stay on standard grip tyres. Fit bigger alloys with stickier rubber and you are in need of larger brakes. Dont bother with different makes of disc in the standard size, you need a bigger brake conversion from one of pugs other models. (requires 15 inch wheels in order to accomodate larger calipers).
Later models were substanntially different to the early GTis. My 2nd car was the revised model, much more mid range power, much stronger gearbox. Peak power felt a little lower compared to my first car though.
Catalytic converters are known to blow themselves apart when the cars are routinely taken to their red line. You will hear a rattle from the exhaust on the overrun when at low revs (30mph on/off throttle in 3rd for eg)
Later model alarms often need to be desensitied, there is some special fix that the garage has to do, does not take long (no more than one hour), and does not require new parts.
Can be a LOT of fun, but be prepared for random reliability issues that can be at substantial cost to fix. My first car's engine blew at 18k, a Pug told me to p*ss off....I sued and won. The second car's clutch went at 9k, alarm issue, trim issues, some starting issues until a sensor was changed. Both cars blew their cats. Oh, and one day a 3 inch long screw came out of the sunroof area and hit me on the head.....no mechanic ever found where it came from

But all it takes is a change of pad, I ran standard discs with M1144's and they were very good, even on track

I disagree with a lot of the comments on the 106gti`s if theyve been looked after theyre fine-fair enough had mine from new and did 42,000 miles and the only things it ever needed were an abs sensor and 2 wishbones-bushes/balljoints died due to bilstein suspension, and a mate had one that had virtually no problems, other than a clutch up to 95,000 miles tho he gave that death everywhere, think he had a gearbox just after 100,000 mile but like i say it got some hammer and were runnin 150bhp-unichipped
