A world leading brand whom are fully commercially aware would not fit something to a car if they felt did not add either a safety/performance benefit or made the car more attractive to buyers.
Take it easy

The question asked was - Is the water spray a gimmick - doesn't matter whether Rolls Royce fit it to their RB Engines or not!!

I think the conclusive answer is - yes, it's a gimmick - unless you are a Chav, then it is probably VITAL to your street cred ........ it's life or death then.
There is no performance benefit as the power sapped from carrying water about is 'maybe' made up for by squirting that same water over the IC.
Try carrying 10 gallons of water about and tell me that it wouldn't slow your car down! No point stripping out the seats and stuff and then adding gallons of water .............. utter madness. And as for a car in a traffic jam on the North Circular, does it need one????? Well, come on - a 2 year old could answer that!
So, back to the fun ..................

The rally boys want to use it, so it has to be fitted to the road cars.

What seems to happen,
Rally cars use it, it works for them.
The qualifying build of cars for group A needed them fitting (Type RA's ? and EVO RS's) to allow it to be used on the rally cars
The road derivertives get it as a 'rally gimmick' or to qualify for group N
an it makes bugger all difference to my car on the road.
Well, thats that put to rest ... it's a gimmick for non-rally cars.
Now, lets dismiss the CockLink in the same way ....
THEN ScoobyNet will get rid of its **** reputation - lets start a "STRAIGHT TALKING ON SN" Crusade!!

So to recap then, IC water spray is a gimmick because it has no use outside of motorsport? fair enough, but what about the people who use their cars for other things than fannying about at the shops etc?
From what i can see pete, you have your car because you obviously like it, you like its performance, its handling and you enjoy driving it the way it is. Others might be the same, others different. I have mine as i think they are a fantastic car, it has performance, handling, looks and to me, its an affordable performance car that ticks all the boxes. The only thing is, i dont pretend to be a good driver, i have my car to do what i enjoy, 1/4 mile racing and taking me too and from work etc. Now maybe you think thats a waste of time, but hey, thats what makes the world go round.
So now we have established that you have your car for driving pete, and i have mine for 1/4 mile. So maybe for your purposes all the above said things are 'gimmicks', but why dismiss them as such for others? The IC Spray does have a purpose again as stated above, but maybe not for all uses. So lets agree to disagree and say in some cases, yes it is, and in others no its not. Hows that?
Did any of this make any sense? who knows

dmc: That made a lot of sense, and I'm sure Pete see's that is the case too.
For normal road use the spray is an accessory that does little, might sell RA's?
For those that have the cars for Motorsport first, road a distant second (ie me) then the spray (atomised not sprayed) is there to help the cause.
I carry 2 liters extra water, that is not a lot of weight in a car that tips the scales @ 1273 Kg.
Does it give me an advantage? Maybe. A duff gearchange will negate any advantage, even more so on a 1/4 mile run.
Stand outside this box.
There are people who would scream that the Impreza is a disgusting crap car, it pollutes, goes far too fast and is utterly irrellavant to the modern transport system. We should all be on push bikes.
There are points of view from many that make for good debate, but it does not belong on a topic such as this?(this now includes my message here).
Not everyone on Snet drives a bog stock car. Why do we need a car with 4 x 4? Or a 200+ bhp engine, or 19 mpg (official urban WRX 2.5).
Pete you drive a terrible car! And mine is even worse 'cause it is modified and does 9 mpg on a hill climb.
Thank god we are all different and with different taste, or we will all be on little black bikes going to and from little homes that all look the same.
Bye, Graham
