IC Spray, is it a gimmick
RA: LOL, never read it like that!
No, maybe ENTERTAINING his wit (I think) , but in danger of getting lambasted for even thinking about mods to my competition Impreza.
Standard cars are great, but I have never owned a standard car other than Company Cars (one of which was a delightful MY99 UK Turbo) and they are much more fun than bog standard ....
Hope I'm not alone.....
Anyway, I drift off thread, and I promised myself I wouldn't do that again.

The detail is here, but you need to navigate around some of the bumps in the 'road'.
So far:
My hill climber has 407 bhp x 380 lbft.
It had an Sti V8 TMIC with the home built water spray (and ice cubes DO make a difference)
That output tapers off very quickly however when the heat build-up over whelms (sp) the TMIC.ie 5 power runs at Well Lane.
I installed a Hybrid FMIC over the winter, and relocated the water spray to spray at the hot side of the FMIC.
After a remap by AndyF the boost enters a full 1000 rpm lower down, a real result, BUT ALSO the performance is sustained far far longer than the TMIC.
The FMIC has the larger capacity, thinner wall construction (less thermal inertia) massive air flow in comparison and is much easier to cool in the right areas.
And I still use ice cubes.
Because pictures speak a lot of words:

Don't make nasty comments about sexual orientation, you wouldn't do it about ethnic or race on a public forum would you

Nowt wrong with flamer kits
Good thread, made me laugh and it's useful.
I could have done with the IC spray when I had a top mount. Wasn't uncommon to see charge temps up around 60-70degrees sitting in traffic in the summer.
WRC cars off set the weight added with the amount of water they carry against the power advantage of using it to get maximum effect.
Someone posted they used it on a rally car at over 70% throttle, not ideal as it needs to be linked with charge temp/boost press/throttle otherwise you're just wasting water. A good ecu such as gems has the tables to control this for you.

A world leading brand whom are fully commercially aware would not fit something to a car if they felt did not add either a safety/performance benefit or made the car more attractive to buyers.
Take it easy

Please see my response #104 to try to get techie
Done my bit to smooth the road.
Off back to Tech section as previously suggested (quite reasonably) above to someone else.
That is the great thing about this Snet, you can find your own 'spot' that meets your expectations.
I hope someone wins from all this!
Graham.

Intercooler water spray is only effective IF the intercooler is intermittently sprayed with water - the finer the mist the better (Aquamist pumps and nozzles would be effective here).
The cooling effect comes from the phase transition from liquid to vapour which takes a huge amount of heat out out of the intercooler.
A saturated intercooler is barely more efficient than a dry intercooler.
The very best systems use a combination of heat and boost - conserving water and not requiring the use of an on/off button as you tear along the road.
Someone on 22b.com did some specific charge temperature tests and a decent system created a great improvement.
Best results come from NO2/CO2 systems which freeze the intercooler - they are expensive and inconvenient however!

Anyway.. I still think it has a use, albeit not particularly under normal road conditions.
