Default IC Spray, is it a gimmick

Is IC Spray a gimmick?

Fair enough the weathers not been too great since purchasing my STI RA so I'm not sure what difference the spray will have.

Although sat in traffic I find it ammusing to watch the mist come out of the vent

What are your thoughts?

We fitted it to a mates car (home made system using the SECS unit as a trigger), and when spraying, the car will sometimes hit boost cut (and certainly averages around 0.1 bar more boost).

Its designed for stage starts and other situations where heat soak is an issue; rather than for constant operation..... In that situation its effective.

How does that work then, on my Sti4 the nozzles point up the way, into the scoop, obviously so that the mist is then drawn in with the air coming in the scoop and down onto the intercooler.

When sitting still at a stage start, 1/4 start etc, if you spray the IC spray manually then surely it will just spray up and then fall onto the inside of the scoop, none getting on the intercooler as the car isn't moving?

Also, why would it then be boost/rpm activated on the STi's?

The IC works like a heat sink rather than a radiator, so by keeping it as cool as possible BEFORE you start getting the engine to work hard you keep the inlet charge denser and cooler.

That's why some cars have it boost / rpm actuated, to try and stop the inlet temps rising.

Isnt that the point we are making above (i.e. it isnt limited to before competition runs, it can work when booting it too, hence my mate seeing +0.1 bar, by keeping temps down?)

If you guys were to buy a intercooler temp display youd see its far from a gimmick and actually works fantastically well in high heat soak conditions

Sorry, Ive not been on. My original remark referred to the original use of the IC spray on early cars; for homologation purposes. I dont know a deal about the later New Age kit.

Not a gimmick in the same way as a Parachute is needed to slow some cars down ....... not a gimmick.

Put it on your Fiesta and you will look a complete and utter dork ...... it is a gimmick!!

THE SAME WITH WATER SPRAYS FOR INTERCOOLERS!!

Are you going to be entering the WRC?? NO?? Then its a GIMMICK!!

Now, isn't that funny????

I had you down as a sensible chap, one that would KNOW that the water spray was for rally cars ONLY!!

Normal Imprezas need NOT apply ...... I never took you as a chav?

It probably is a gimmick on New Age cars, although it may well work too. On earlier cars it was fitted for FIA homologation; as was the fifth (unutilised) injector: so it wasnt a gimmick, but it might not have done a deal.....

I heard at the shootout that some people place ice cubes on their intercooler while waiting to run.

So there must be some benefit to keeping it cool

Pete, I agree with you, I have NEVER used my water spray button. Its a bit like the Alt Gr button on the keyboard: there for a reason but mostly under utilised.

You talk the talk Pete, I bet if I met you in the street I would fancy you straight away. Please send me a photo of your buttocks

Steady on GC8, that's a mildly pornographic statement for a family forum

Okay lets just look at a few facts.

The impreza turbo uses an INTERCOOLER.

You may be a bright spark and notice the word contains a smaller word COOLER. There is a very good reason for this, it COOLS the intake charge. The charge needs to be cooled to prevent detionation amongst other reasons.

Try a little test for yourself if you think you know better.

Blow on the back of your hand........ cold?? (a little?)

Now lick the back of your hand and blow on it... ( colder??? MUCH!!!)

Now tell me a waterspray does nothing for your charge temps....

Enjoy
