The only reason that certain impreza's have IC water spray is for homologation purposes. I help run a mates group n gc8 and IC spray is essential, it constantly sprays the intercooler when the throttle is more than 70% open, the crew need to carry extra water in the car to top up the spray after each stage as it can empty the 5 litre tank in less than 5 miles

I've amassed 30K miles in my WR1 and used the Int-Cooler spray..................
ONCE, yep, once (about the same amount as DCCD)... and that was just to see what it did! absolute gimmick! but hey, I love gimmicks!?!

The I/C spray on my Spec C has an automatic option(as on most JDM versions) and is controlled by the ECU I believe. I went up to York for Scoobynet Live, but even with all the rain I used 1/2 gallon of water.
From speaking with another Spec C owner at Prodrive last year, he told me that he'd used a tankfull, over 3 gallons, lapping the "Ring".
During a brief warm spell a couple of weeks ago (the sun actually came out for once), my I/C spray relay was clicky away like a good 'un.
And no, before the usual detractors on this forum suggest it, I wasn't driving like a ****.

Simple physics.. In the same way sweat cools us down in the heat the water spray helps the heat transfer from the I/C..
Heat transfers faster from a solid to a liquid and a liquid to a gas than it does from a slolid to a gas.. If that makes sense?

I have to say I disagree with Pete on this one.. How can anyone seriously say spraying a hot metallic object with water will not seriously increase heat transfer rates?
Weather or not you will actually use this during normal road conditions is questionable though!

Now I know why, it's so people know you receive not give.....
Will there be a response ...... if it does come here goes

I pressed the IC button when my bonnet was propped open to see how powerful the spray was. A disappointing dribble came out rather than a fine mist. May be I'll stick on a Walbro 255 fuel pump and 4 BAR FPR if they would be happy pumping water instead

For hill climbing I manually start the IC spray (a home brewed system) just after the start line is left behind and leave it on till the finishing line is just behind. That is about 55 seconds (I'm not very fast) to cover a mile.
I will use about 2 liters and if you look at the surface sprayed it is almost dry after the run. Without the spray the IC is hot to the touch.
I believe it works (in such extreem circumstances).
For the runs we use ice cubes in the cooling water a few minutes before the start
