Firmware updates are the norm. (Just look at how many have been released for the psp). The other things just sound like possible slight teething problems with a very small percentage of units. I'm not worried about it...

True.

Well mine didn't appear until 8:30pm. According to the mail header it was sent out @ 6:36pm. Must have a server sending them out, but the demand on it must be slowing down the sending process.

Iain - How's your NTL connection today? Mine is DIRE - like 0.2Mb down and 0.3 up - and I'm on 10Mb....

... and my CD has lots of stuff on it - Quake, Doom, etc. shout if you want to drop round and grab a copy.

NTL are doing a load of maintainence work at the moment. It's been up and down like a yoyo all week (bit of a nightmare when working from home and trying to vpn into work). Still seems to be varying speed etc even now...

My CD is definitely blank. I've tried it in 3 machines to make sure (just in case my drive couldn't read it) and they're all the same. I'll drop cdworld a note, and if I get no joy, I might grab a copy off you

Be interested to get some first hand views when you guys got yours, Iain, you do dev work are you planning to do any of your own stuff for it? Does it have any time/date functionality to do basic PIM functionality?

I'm here all day, playing with this thing - so if you bring a working copy of MAME round - with a compatible ROM set - I'll sort you out with a copy of the CD no problem at all!!!

Enjoy...

Called NTL - Engineer coming round on Monday to attempt to rectify my 45% packet loss and 0.2Mb 'broad'band...

Whoa - MAME working very nicely...

Scramble, Defender, Galaga, etc. etc. work very well, look very nice and are very playable. You can even rotate the screen to play in 'portrait or landscape'.

Now for some Sonic and friends.... and perhaps a "Day of the Tentacle.."

This thing is cool....!

Nah, no AAs with mine. Just slapped my 2800mAh NiMHs in and away we go...

Two CDs (one manual one, and one with gp2x.co.uk 'stuff' on it - games, emus, utils, etc.), one spare/different joystick cap and a USB cable came with mine...

Case seems quite nice as well. Will probably need a screen protector or two shortly - which I also read somewhere shipped with it, but no sign.

Back to Quake...

Which ROM set are you using for MAME?

Just downloaded an copied over MAMEGP2x version 2.3.

Will ROM set 0.34 work?

IIRC they recommend 0.34

I just grabbed a handful of old old MAME roms and slapped 'em in there... most seem to work OK.

Cheers. I have the 0.34 ROM set. Just tried Arkanoid, and this works.

Just tried the AMIGA emulator but having no joy with loading stuff up, even though I have the Kickstart ROMS (1.3).

The Megadrive (DRMD) one keeps locking up when scanning for ROMs.

My ROM set reports itself as 0.70 and is a couple of years old I would have thought. Goodness knows how old 0.34 is!

Only tried Galaga so far but it works a treat. Trouble is the unit is too narrow if you go for the sideways on view which is the one where it looks best.

jpor - have you installed the SDL stuff yet? Was wondering if you may need that for those other emulators? Not sure how a program will fail if it hasn't access to that. MAME is fine without it so far, I've not installed the SDL runtime.

Not yet. Will give it a go.

Just been using the gp2x on the T.V via the T.V cable. Beware if running on batteries. The batteries just got zapped of all power after 10 Minutes (Normal cheapo Akalines).

Sorry I didn't state my bit very well

It's when the GP2x is rotated 90 degress and the joystick is then bottom left that I prefer the view but struggle with the controls. Not enough console to hold on to for my hands. I did discover after awhile that you can also use the volume as a fire button after playing one game by pressing A which was then at the top of the screen

Mine arrived today too

Still laying our new floor though so it's been shelved until the DIY is complete. Looking like sometime tomorrow now, so that would at least give me a day and a bit on it. Shame that my internet connection has still crapped out so I can't actual get on at all from home. Sitting round my neighbours again on his connection

Initial impressions are that it's a great little machine. The available software (all homebrew at the moment) is still all in alpha / beta, and so can be a little flakey, but I managed to play a load of mame, neogeo (without sound), and Atari ST stuff today.

Iain, you do dev work are you planning to do any of your own stuff for it?
That's the plan. I'm going to install up a copy of Linux in VMWare so I can start playing with stuff without breaking the gp2x Looking at the sdk stuff, it actually looks quite accessable. Just need some ideas now. Somehow I don't really feel like coding yet another version of pong

Does it have any time/date functionality to do basic PIM functionality?
I don't think so. When you turn it off it's off, so although you could run a Linux based PIM on it, you'd have to set the date/time every time you turned it on, (or at least it seems so anyway - I may be wrong).
