Hi

I need to replace my RE050's on my 05 WRX following a track day last weekend. The cars done 10k miles in total & the tyres were holding up very well - c.5mm front & 6 mm rear.

However after 100 hard trackday (Elvington) miles, the front are totally rogered - down to 3mm with bald shoulders! The backs are still relatively unscathed.

I've decided to replace all 4 & keep the Bridgeys for another track day. Looking at the votes, the Goodyear Eagke F1's seem to be the pick of the bunch - I've found them for £79.70 each mail order with the Toyo T1-Rs at £82.00 a corner. Do you think this is a good deal & which do you think I should go for. I really want a tyre that performs well, is less noisy than the RE050's & will last well.

Cheers

Jonesy

These are good prices, epsecially the Goodyears - where have you seen them for £79.70?

I've been quoted £90 fitted for Toyo and £100 fitted for Goodyear.

with bald shoulders!
Interesting as my RE050s have gone badly on the outside edges but the inside edges are fine. I wonder is this is common?

Got them on my spec c very impressive, make reo70's look like

Prices are from www.elitedirect.com - saw an ad in Autocar - going to order the F1's from them today - over £10 cheaper per tyre than blackcircles

Had Goodyear F1s (GSD2) on my old 2000MY scoob and they lasted for ages (sold the car after they had done 20k and they still had loads of grip), plus they were great in the wet and the dry. Only other rubber I had was the OE Bridgestones which, knowing no different at the time, I thought were OK, especially coupled with such an explosive car! Boy was I in for a surprise when I put the F1s on.
Sadly I have since read that the GSD3s are susceptible to splitting, which isn't such good news as now I am back in the land of Scooby-Goodness I would love to get another set of these but not so sure now. It does seem that the 17"s (and higher) seem to be the ones most likely to split but still doesn't instill confidence.
My ex-wife had an MX-5 which I encouraged her to put Toyo T1-s on and they were a nightmare - very poor in the wet and gave way with no warning. A lot of fun when no other cars about but not so great when going round a 'bout at 15 and fighting to keep it on the road! Don't even get me started on the fact that she needed 4 new ones after only about 10k miles when my GSD2s were still going strong!!

I have heard very mixed reviews on the Toyos ... I for instance hate them, but I know others that love them. One of the differences seems to be wheel size ... on 17's naff, on 18's good ?

Yes, the Toyo's seem to be different on different cars. Over on the RX8 forums the T1R is considered to be useless, I recall a thread that lumped Toyo's together with brands like Matador. They love their Bridgestone RE040's. That's on 18's by the way.

Once I tried some RE040's on the Scoob and they were definitely useless... while the wife's RX8 does seem to like them.

Have run the OEM Bridgestones, Goodyear F1s ( both GSD2 & GSD3 ), Toyo T1-S and T1-Rs as well as some Nankang NS-2s!! ( they came fitted on some wheels... )

Have to say I found the Goodyears by far the best.

I took the advice of this thread and bought a set of Goodyear Eagle F1s. I think I have driven on them long enough to give them a big thumbs up.

Now that they're bedded in, thumbs up for my Avon ZZ3's. Good grip in the dry and very confidence inspiring in the wet.

be careful with the Goodyear F1's you need to have the XL (extra Load marking) otherwise the sidewall may split

I am looking for a place that sells Bridgestone RE070 225/45/ZR17. anyone know one around Surrey?

I am assuming that i can squeeze these on standard newage rims existing tyre size 215/45/17 I know the rolling diameter will change as the ratio is going to be 45% of 225 not 215 but it should not make that much difference??

Can i ask the reason why you would want to fit 225/45-17 instead of the standard size the chassis is designed for??

Try 40 profile ?

Use the Toyo web site, it has a calculator for various tyre diameter / width / profiles to help get the closest rolling radius.

I see your point if you want to run on the re070's,it's just when you start fitting wider tyres like that you are messing around with the balance of the car.

Your not only laying down more rubber but also raising the profile of the tyre, which can lead to more sway in the sidewall, which can then affect the tightness of the handling. To be honest though those re070 have such stiff sidewall's that i can't really see it been noticeable, just make sure you get familiar with the handling with those tyres on before you take it on the track.

And have fun!!

That's not strictly true. I run T1-Rs on my RX8 and they are proving to be excellent tyres. The RE040s are no longer available for the RX8. The newer RE050s are highly rated but very expensive.

Goodyear F1s don't seem to suit the RX8, but I ran them on my Scoobs and they were great.

My vote would still go for the T1-R as an all round tyre though.

OE Bridgestones on the other half's 01 wagon were average at best. Replaced with Toyo T1-S (17") and they were a huge improvement. I went to T1-S on my 03 WRX and they were again better than OE but wore quickly (may have something to do with the way I drive....) and soon had to be replaced. Went for Goodyear GSD3 F1 (18") and they were SOOO much better than the Toyo T1-S. Better in standing water, and lots more grip all round. Awe inspiring in the wet with much better lateral grip. A lot quicker for me in the twisties as they're not at all 'twitchy' like the Toyos were.

Toyo T1-R for me on for about a year now still going strong after 10K+ miles fantastic grip, wet, etc may have to try those Goodyears though. The Bridgestones ones just wheel spinned all the time.

mine are 235/45's ... so much wider . As I alluded to ... each to his/her own ... and I am sure different cars with different suspension setups react differently to different tyres in different ways.

ps .. do you think I used the word different too much ? Don't answer that !!
