Just had F1 GSD3's fitted to replace Pirelle P6000's. Also had prodrive spring kit fitted at the same time to my '01 WRX. Completely changed the car! Realise how BAD p6000's were especially in damp conditions. Overall, braking distances improved, doesn't spin back inner wheel when pulling out of side road with a bit of right foot. Quieter, just feel so much better. Also lost the Starsky & Hutch comedy squeel around sharp corners, which always made people look at you like you were driving like a loon even when you weren't.

Not sure what they're like at speed, as there's no motorways in Guernsey! Roll on next years holidays in France

As far as I'm concerned, F1's rule , P6000's are pants !

I'd just fitted 91Y GSD3's to replace the MY04 STI OE RE040 Potenza's which are rated 90W. Since 91 is a higher rating I thought that would be fine.

There's also a 94W available, do you mean these are the XL spec ?

Ok,

So as you will see in my other thread, it's tyre replacement time for me again !

1) Who has (and who hasn't) had excessive wear on the shoulders of their Gooodyears F1's ?

2) What's the diffrence between F1 GSD2's and GSD3's ? (I've been offered both, GSD2's were £20 cheaper per tyre. How many bothered with the "XL" rating ?

3) What are people's experience's of the Michelin Pilot Sport 2's and the Toyo T1R's in the WET ??

Anybody that has had any of these tyres, p-l-e-a-s-e reply !!

In answer to Andy's questions, i'm running a set of GoodYear GSD3's with the XL rating at the moment, and I swear by them. I had D2's which I eventually replaced with D3's on my previous car (206 Gti) and the difference between them is marginal, I thought the ride was slightly quieter on the D3's, and more comfortable, although tread thickness on the new tyres could account for this! looks wise the D3's have a sharper 'V' tread pattern. When I got the scoob it had Toyo T1R's, these are great in the dry, on par i'd say with the Goodyears, although in the wet they didn't feel as sure footed and they wore down damn quick!

Regarding Michelin Pilots, the missus had these on her previous car, a BMW compact with 18" rims, these were also very good in both wet & dry. She has since got a Z3 and had GSD3's fitted to this all round. She reckons the Goodyears feel far better in the wet, and about the same as the Michelins in the dry, I just can't justify the extra expense for the Michelins!

My advice, go for the GoodYears, you won't be disappointed! I shopped around and managed to get 4 x 215/45/17 XL fitted for £356.

MY MY98 HAS GOT NANKANG NS-2'S ALL ROUND, THESE ARE GOOD IN THE DRY FOR A CHEAP TYRE BUT THEY SCARE ME IN THE WET

EVEN THOUGH THERE ALL LIKE NEW IM GOING TO REPLACE THEM, THERES HARDLY ANY GRIP IN THE DAMP ESPECIALLY ON ROUNDABOUTS & THERE QUITE NOISEY ON THE ROAD TOO.

THE CURRENT SIZE IS 205/45/17 SO IM GOING TO FIT 215/40/17 OR MAYBE EVEN 215/45/17. ON MY M3 I HAD CONTI-SPORT 2'S AND THEY WERE EXCELLENT BOTH IN THE WET & DRY BUT ALSO COME WITH A PRICE TAG & ONLY DID 6K ON THE REAR.

GOING BY EVERYONES OPINION & AFTER BEING IN THE TYRE TRADE FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS IM GOING TO OPT FOR EITHER G-YEAR F1'S OR AVON ZZ3'S. THESE SEEM TO OFFER GOOD GRIP IN THE DRY & MOST IMPORTANTLY THE WET BUT ALSO BENEFIT FROM BEING NOT TOO EXPENSIVE.

My previous car was a MY99 shod with Kumho Ecsta 712's which were extremely good for what is essentially a high-end budget tyre. Excellent grip in the dry, predictable, safe breakaway in the wet - even passable in snow. The tyres were nearly new when I bought the car, I covered 21,500 miles and sold it with the same tyres - which probably still had 1,000 - 2,000 miles left in them. A bargain for £55'ish per wheel.

The replacement was a MY00 which came with Bridgestone Potenza RE720's. By contrast to the Kumhos, these were noisy, harsh, hard-riding and didn't really inspire much confidence, wet or dry. I have since replaced them with Toyo T1R's (big thumbs up for Jim Dickson in Cumbernauld nr. Glasgow - superb deal and friendly service!!!) and they are streets ahead of the Potenzas. Excellent ride, quieter, and great grip in the dry. I haven't had them long enough to comment on wet performance or longevity, but first impressions are very good.

PZero Assimetricos on 17" on my MYUK2000 - OK in the dry - really terrible in the wet!!!
Toyo T1-S on same 17" MYUK2000 - very good grip, wet and dry, wear rate fair, progressive breakaway fantastic for feel and confidence (SO2s in comparison had more grip but snappy breakaway)
Toyo T1-S on UKSTi2002 - Good grip and feel, wet and dry no complaints except, terrible wear; I had to replace the fronts at 8000 miles, inside edges down to the wire and I've got a proper Powerstation geom setup (and only running 1.5 degrees negative camber). Rears look like they are good for two sets of fronts. Therefore, not a recommendation yet the tyre is good from a pure performance POV.

Other thoughts, P6000 (old ones from about 5 years back) were absolute crap, but, the current ones on my wife's Leon Cupra are really pretty good, dry and wet grip, feel and have currently done 21,000. I think I'll get 30,000 out of them! (I drive the car plenty so it gets "driven" )

I have a track car (Golf Mk2) used exclusively at the Ring where the tyres are used more like on a road than "track" would usually mean; have tried assorted tyres:

1. T1-S - too soft, wore out in no time at all, were chunking and literally, fell apart after 70 laps. Grip was poor, as was stability
2. PZero Assimetricos - quite soft but wore ok - feel not too bad, grip ok
3. PZero Corsa Cup/R-Tyres - nice, grip great (obviously), wear not bad, even not too bad in the wet (once tyres up to temp). Not relevant for this discussion.
4. GSD3s - FAN-BLOODY-TASTIC!!!! Wear unbelievable (167 laps one set, 205 another), great grip and stability, wet and dry, great feel, progressive - I LOVE THIS TYRE!!!

Due to it's performance/cost/life, I can't bring myself to switch from the GSD3 on the track car to anything else, and will deffo fit these on the Cupra and the STi come renewal time!!!

Very impressed. Damp OK, fully wet and fully dry amazing......

done 13000 miles on pirelli P7000 best so far wet and dry,seem to be half way thro their life
nicer ride and feel
far better than the 2 sets of bridgestones that I have got thro

Avon ZZ3 on mine,as said before very good dry and wet plus the fact they offer truly good value for money around £80 a corner fitted give or take a few quid.

Lightbulb Michelin Pilot Sport

My WRX came with Bridgestone S03's (Skyline standard tyre i think) and they were pretty descent all round. i got 10,000 miles out of them and then fitted another set for another (you guessed it) 10,000 miles.

then i got a set of some Toyo T1-R great in the dry not bad in the wet but i can't give you a proper test opinion because they only lasted 4000 miles! ok they were £85 a corner.

Now i have a set of Michelin pilot Sport (not Sport 2 as they are unavailable in 225/45 17") and they are really good so far about 3500 miles and still going well. £125 a corner but you get what you pay for and when you take into account the wear it make them comparable with the Toyo's

i had Goodyear F1's on my R21 Quadra and must say they were brilliant.

umm, they are mate. have a look on mytyres.com

best tyre? if i had my own pit crew to follow me around and change my wheels depending on the weather then:-

dry - bridgestone REO70. no doubt. such a grippy tyre, downside is harsh ride.

wet - michelin PS2. almost as much grip in the wet as in the dry, really blown away by the wet performance. not as good in the damp as i thought they would be, but a much more comfortable tyre than the REO70, much improved ride quality with these downside is no rim protection (on my 8" rim anyway) and they look ****e! too rounded on the shoulders whereas the REO70 looks loads better.

roll on the summer and i can get the REO70's back on

Just had 4 new F1s GSD3 fitted (205/50 R16s), feel a lot better than the Bridgestone's in the cornering. They seem to respond well in the wet too. Only paid £281 all in.

Hi!

Bridgestone Turanza, my second set of tyres since new.

The first set lasted 21,000km, albeit they were really rough at the end, prolly due to the heat we had this summer.....

The first were the standard Bridgestones that came with the car.

I prefer the older S03s than these new ones, they seem to make a bit of noise, but they grip like a dog on heat!

£152? my tyres are charging £105 so with tops a tenner for fitting, still way under that!

to be honest they aren't £30 a tyre better than what mytyres want for the goodyear F1. these would be my choice.

as for the REO70's i don't think you can get them for much less than about £150 a tyre just the utter bollocks in the dry and good in the wet. on a damp day like today though they'd be all over the place!

good mileage (my current set have done 11k with probably at least 2k left in them and i tried my best to kill them before i put my winter tyres on) very noisy, very hard and tramline quite alot when worn. my opinion, a good trackday tyre/summer tyre.

Just wore out the factory Bridgestone RE070's and had Goodyear Eagle F1's fitted. HATED THEM !!! they had plenty of grip and there ride was better that the RE070's but there side wall is just way too soft after getting used to the nearly race tyre stiffness of the factory tyres (RE070's) and it made the car feel as if the back end was walking all over the road (i.e. not tracking well) under spirited driving conditons. Thankfully my tire shop took them back and sorced me some more Bridgestones. Couldn't be more glade that I went to the extra trouble and expense to get the RE070's back .

had my 04 sti 2months.dont like the pots as ididnt like them on my civic
type r.changed those to spec 2 (£75 each)and was a lot bettter dry and definatelly wet.
was going to get some for my sti unless theres a better tyre out there in the same price range?
is there not a table out there with prices for comparison

my scoob (95 WRX) was/is fitted with Nankang tyres
I THINK they're tyres...theyre' black and round with pretty grooves on 'em

however I always thought tyres were supposed to be a contact point with tarmac - provide friction and grip
..the nankangs appear to have 'some' grip when accelerating in a straight line but ZERO grip in corners; very twitchy on the brakes; MAHOOSIVE understeer and - as a result - they now have ZERO tread on the outer edges

I shant ever be buying Nankang tyres

I have Avons 225/45/R17 Z rating tyres for my 2002 model. 88quid inc tax each. Last 15000 miles of hard driving. Not bad at all!

Just ordered 4 gsd3's from my local tyre place at about 90 quid a corner, had them on my m3 and great wet and dry.
Michelin pilots on my mates 330 d chipped beemer stuck like **** to a blanket but expensive.
Had p zero rossos on my last sti which were great and got over 10000 miles including 2 track days replaced by dunlop sp9000 sports which were no where near as good, very vague at the front end.
Bfg's and bridgestones ok for normal everyday cars but not really scooby material.
Had toyos ages back on a 306 S16 and really good but wore quick.

Fitted 4 Pirelli P Zero Neros (extra load) about 1100 miles ago and am well impressed. Seem to have reduced the understeer and turn in is crisper than I remember it was when the original tyres were new. Wet grip seems hugely improved too.

Changed the standard fit bridgestones 040's about 500 miles ago for a set of toyo t1s and i can say in the dry they are slightly better but in the wet they are scary.Update should of checked after fitting but tyre pressures were 26psi front 28psi back now changed to 34 front 32 back and wet grip is alot better.
