Toyos T1-R's bedded in now. A much smoother and quieter ride. The rim protectors are not as good as the bridgestones though, they are flush with the rim so not much protection there !. Seem to feel nice and no tramlining yet. Get to play a bit harder at the weekend with them.

nobody ever mentions BF Goodrich or have I missed it. Available for about £65 fitted. I used them on classic without probs. I have also seen them mentioned in independent survey as being near the best in stopping distance tests. However I did get a lot of noise from the rear end which was thought to be bearing or diff. but turned out to be the tyres, which were well worn.

F1's for me. I used to be in the biss - years ago now. Was able to try all sorts and found that best tyre manufacturer changes from year to year as they all tend to improve when the other raises the bar.
Like anything else you get what you pay for, but what is defo is the better the grip the lesser the mileage.

I really liked my Potenza 070's, brilliant in the dry but lethal in wet conditions but they are a dry / track biased tyre so kept them for trackdays.
Michelin's are good but not any better than the F1's and not worth more. Quite a few people I spoke to swear by th Toyo TR1's but can't see me changing.

[quote=siborg]when i bought my car last year it had marshall tyres on and they were cr4p
ok in dry but lethal in wet, oversteer and understeer just didnt know what they were going to do.
but have since swopped for eagle f1s and think they are superb no understeer since i fitted them and now have lots more confidence driving car now(1st 4wd car ive owned)

Siborg you can't be trying hard enough I voted for F1's but I still get understeer, it depends alot on the road surface

Up until last week, I never thought the Good Year would be a decent tyre. I tried it anyway as I could get it a lot cheaper than the Bridgeys, and it blew me away. Another vote for the GSD3s!

Bridgestone 070's for me fantastic dry grip Ok in Wet
Goodyear F1's less dry grip better than 070's in wet, but have too soft sidewalls which kills the shoulders way too early

Michelin PS2s (225/40R18) for me, one of the most expensive but for a very good reason!

I have the scooby on Bridgestone RE40's - tyre noise is not an issue as the exhaust / induction noise would drown out tyre noise. Handling wise - I have only had a single traction loss moment in the rain - and it was progressive enough to catch and correct. Wear wise - I have put 15000 miles on these and I would say another 5000 would see them ready for replacement.

I have BF Goodrich Profile R tyres on my TDI Leon - I think these are excellent tyres - my car in standard form will hold on very well in the dry and well enough in the wet. They are maybe a bit noisier than the continental Sport Contacts that were on before but at £25 a corner cheaper and with similar wear characteristics - I would stay with Goodrich.

I would consider the Goodrich tyres to be a possibility on the Impreza when the time comes.

Kwikfit are doing 25% off tyres when buying 4 at a time. Was quoted £500 for Michelin ps2 balanced and fitted so I will be trying these next. Currently running Pirelli rosso's which are v.good.

Default toyo T1R

Whwn I got my '95 WRX import it was on Dunlop 9000 Sports. handled ok. Changed front two to Toyo T1R... much better grip wet and dry, and sets the car for oversteer as opposed to understeer as it was with Dunlops all round! The Toyo gets my vote, and the Dunlops on the rear will soon be history! Although as a drift set up the current mix is perfect!

Any one tried / got any comments on Kumho tyres, specifically the higher performance ones like ECSTA 712 ? on 17" rims?

Currently on OEM Bridgestones ( 040's ?? ) 215/45/17 which are average but lasted a while - 20,000 plus!

and another tyre that i found ok is nankang not sure which but they were cheap, i bought wheels from a friend for track days and used them on track (bruntingthorpe)when it was chucking it down and standing water on track and apart from abit of tyre roll (15"wheels 50 series profile)cant fault them
got to agree here- got marshals on some new 18" alloys. Keeps me awake driving! Tramlining bad, tyre blocks seem to shimmy , great if you like going sideways all the time, but expensive on underpants. dont go near them!!

Just changed from 235/45 R17 RE070's to T1-R's.

I am hoping that its just that I haven't done enough miles on the T1-R's yet (c.100) to bed them in .... 'cos they are no where near as good as the RE070's for dry cornering. Infact I have backed right off as they feel so squidgy (35psi) and insecure compared to the RE070's.

Haven't tried the T1-R's in the wet yet .. maybe tomorrow looking at the weather .. but I am sure they will be better that the RE070's.

The T1-R's do tramline far less than the RE070's.

Noise levels are about the same, just slightly different.

T1-R's are a little more comfortable than the RE070's, but not that much.

Haven't tried any serious braking so can't assess whether there's any difference between them.

And also can't say too much about the T1-R wear either as they are new, but my RE070's have 2-3mm left after 10,000 miles including one track day .. so am keeping them for one more track day.

.... all IMHO of course ....

I have the Yoko Pradas, very very happy. Done a couple of track days with them and they're still going strong.
Great wear considering the abuse and absolutley amazing grip in the dry...
obviously lower in the wet, but still sure footed.

I've had T1-R's fitted for 22K and have been extremely pleased with the performance and wear rate. For the first few hundreds miles they were sliding all over the place, but once bedded in, wet or dry they have been better than the F1's I had on a previous Impreza.

I paid around £80 a corner 12 months ago, Motorsport Wheels in Leeds.

Been following this thread with interest. I'm about to replace the tyres on my 04 WRX.

I've been unable to find Michelin PS2 in 215/45/17, does anyone know different? I've been offered PS (not 2s) instead but peoples (I guess STI drivers running 225/45) praise here seems to be exclusively for the PS2 model. Is the PS model also held in such high regard?

Next in line are Eagle F1s. These only seem to be currently available in the 91 XL load rating but I'm sure I've seen them in the past with an 87 load rating which matches the rating on the standard Bridgestone RE050. Are peoples recommendations for the F1s based on 87 or 91 or both?

Cheers

Kwik Fit have an offer on at the moment so I went in to check out prices for PS2s for my WRX on 215/45/17. I was told that they can supply them in this size but they came out a lot more expensive than 225s, even with the discount. They said that 225s will fit, though the different circumference will put the odometer and speedo out slightly; there's a website been mentioned in posts on here where you can check by how much.

I then checked on the Michelin website and it looked like I could only get PSs in the right size (ie same as you), but when I checked the spec and the appearance, they looked the same. I haven't rung Michelin (because I've decided to upgrade the suspension first) but suggest you might give them a try for a definitive view. If you do, it'd be interesting to hear what they say.

Hope this helps.

I'm waiting to hear back from Michelin about 215/45/17 SP2s. Will let you know when I get a difinitive answer.

I've spoken to Goodyear and they have confirmed that the 215/45/17 Eagle F1 GS-D3 is only availalbe as the extra load 91 XL. The previous GS-D2 (which they do still have but no longer make) is only available as an 87 load rating.

On the vote itself, I'd say the RE050 is generally a good tyre for the WRX but it has weaknesses as descibed in this thread already and there are better tyres available.

Thumbs up

Toyo T1-r's for me, brilliant all round tyre but superb in the wet. Tracked at Bruntingthorpe in the wet, course was like a river, 150mph down the back straight solid, no aquaplaning and unbelievable grip on all of the corners. They transformed the car, however, they were fitted to my 9000 Saab.
