Blimey that IS cheap. Mate of mines got a diesel c-max (like you, got kids and a dog so needs a family car) and got to say I was well impressed with it.

Yeah unless youre gonna do some serious off-road riding there isnt any point in paying the premium for a full-suss bike. Ive got the same Cannondale hardtail I bought in 1996, just added front suspension forks to it about 5 years ago. Great bike, definately worth the outlay for the use Ive had out of it.

Sounds like a good time to upgrade, plus it gives you something to do tomorrow.

Hmmm. Wish I still had my GT LTS from a few years back. Hydraulic discs front and back. You could also adjust the damping and rebound on the rear shock to give it a kind of lock out effect.

Wish I hadn't sold it now!

Disc brakes are great if you do alot of riding in mud and other crap or if youre into downhill riding where you need good performance, otherwise in my experience a good set of v-brakes are perfectly adequate and cheaper to buy and maintain.

IIRC it uses the reservoir to allow for expansion when the brake fluid gets hot. On mine, you could also move an adjuster on top of the reservoir to force the fluid further into the pipe to firm up or soften the lever feel.

Not sure on the price of pads nowadays. It's 8 or 9 years since I had a bike with discs. I'm sure technology is way in front of what it used to be so I reckon they'll be cheap in comparison.

I agree that Vbrakes can work better on the road but 99% of the time I was throwing myself down muddy cliffs and needed discs to stop myself before hitting the trees at the bottom.

With Vbrakes, you have to clear the crud off the rim before you even start to slow (horrible grinding noises! ), and could also lead to rims being ground down prematurely too. Not a problem with discs, unless your riding axle deep in gloop!

Depends what riding you do, in the end.
