the hire car guy when he delivered the car said, dont worry about those consumption figures on the dash being low, he said I have been ragging it.
The figures when he delivered it were over 40 mpg, currently I think they are on 36.* mpg

It's not on fire?
It's pulling a high G turn and what you can see is something to do with the moisture in the air and the difference in pressure from where it was (minding its own business) to getting blasted at several hundred mph around the leading edges of the wings.
Quite a few of the passenger planes I've been on do the same on take off and landing.
A quick Google search:
Water vapor is present in air and is normally invisible. For a given amount of pressure, that water vapor will remain unseen. Clouds form when a moist air mass encounters an area of low enough pressure to cause the water to condense. An example is when moist air rises. Atmospheric pressure declines as alitude goes up. As an air mass rises, due to terrain or other reasons, the pressure drops, water condenses and clouds form.
A propeller tip, rotor tip, wing tip and even just the upper surface of the wing can produce enough of a pressure drop to cause the available moisture in the air to condense. If the aircraft is in very cold air, the condensate will freeze. If not, it will only last a few seconds or until the pressure stabilizes
God, I can't wait to get a job - I have far too much time on my hands.

2000 Subaru Impreza UK Turbo, remapped to 242bhp - £60 V-Power = 310 miles
2005 Vauxhall Vectra 1.9 CDTi, unmodified 150bhp version - £60 Sainsbury's City Diesel = 560 miles.
Admittedly based on "motorway miles" but the figures speak for themselves. You also physically get less fuel in the tank with £60 of diesel as it costs that wee bit more but the car still goes further on less fuel.
I do miss the power when overtaking in the Vectra though.

had some good news today though, mortgage is up for renewal in april and our existing lender have given us a new deal that means we pay nearly £300 per month less
Means I can get a job with less pay and we wont be worse off, therefore should be easier for me to find something

The Vectra has very little low down (turbo not spooled up), then lights up the tyres between 2000 and 3000rpm and then nothing after that.
