"Nobody is denying they have the right to buy the wrong car"

what crap.......they walk in the showroom - they see a 5 series , they see an X5.............they prefer the X5 hence it is the better car for them.

Contradiction in terms.

You class a 4x4 purchase as "wrong" if 4x4 is not required. Therefore you ARE denying the right to buy. Why is it wrong?

no its not, its better if you want one.

if you can afford a BMW X5 lets assume the driver isnt a complete retard and can read car magazines......lets assume he knows the 5 is "better" but regards both as being a LONG way beyond what he really needs.

he is in the realm of personal choice, both cars are so much more than he needs it doesnt come down to the fine points of Top Gears review....it comes down to what he likes....maybe he just likes big chunky cars in the same way some here stick over size spoliers on their cars.

it has NO impact on anyone else (unlike the noise from stupid size exhausts) so why give it any thought?

A Vauxhal Omega or a Ford Scorpio or a Lexus GS will get you from A to B as well as a 5 series, there no real reason to by RWD. But my point is there is no really necessity to have a prestige car, like theres no necessity to have a 300bhp Impreza or an X5 or a Rover Sport. Go to a another forum of another make, and see what the general consensous is over people opinions of BMW drivers. I'm sure people also think its amusing that people waste their money on expensive BMW cars only to be wasted by a Nova with a Calibre turbo engine conversion, for example. But I'm sure you don't give a **** what they think.

I'm not against BMW/Scoobies or anyother manufacturer, I drive a BMW myself. People buy whatever they want and don't give a toss what other people think. Its called freedom of choice. What boring place this would be if everyone drove same car.

Don't agree that any of the cars you mention are a replacement for a 5.As for 'no reason' for a RWD car I don't agree with that either but then again I do like driving.
I for one am not denying these peoples right to buy an X5, just as I said it's objectively a worse car than another car sold by the same manufacturer that does the same task.
I also think it makes them look like crass ***** with no taste and without the fallback position of ' best car for purpose' that drives my own ethos. On the otherhand perhaps their purpose is to look like a ****?
Why give it any thought? 'Cos someone asked the question and this is a forum.

Maybe these people have enough in their lives and dont need to extract enjoyment out of A to B beyond being sat in the car they want.

Exactly, you don't agree. Go to a Lexus forum and I'm sure they will say otherwise. Likewise, people may want a X5 over a 5 due to better load carrying abilities, better for towing, increased percieved protection, better visability, etc. I drive a BMW because of reliability, build quality, longevity, wanted to try out RWD and because I can and don't give a monkeys what people think of BMW drivers. I enjoy driving like every other car enthusiast, even so I had more entertaining drive from my Clio172 despite its FWD layout.

Olly, you need to change your username because you speak sense and you can't afford to get mixed up with a similar username that often spouts ****e

Oh and the Cayenne Turbo is a superb motor to look at, and to pedal, in my opinion.

The X5 looks far better than the Merc too.

Not being bothered what the poor people think about your choice of motor is good too.

Usually I'm a lurker. But some of the previous posts on here got my goat a bit.

In the world of Scoobynet, if you are a dole depending, burberry wearing, illiterate, lazy, thieving scum chav, then you are labelled a tw@t.

In the world of Scoobynet, if you slog your guts out for years, pay 40% tax on the button, be respectful, be law abiding, take risks, be succesfull, and at the end of it, decide to treat yourself to a rather nice car that happens to be expensive, then you are labelled a tw@t.

I don't get it.

lol@the X5 drivers

There are two pints of milk- both from the same company, both with more or less the same contents. However one comes in a different shaped, larger bottle and it's harder to drink out of. It also costs more. Buy one and you're an idiot!

Worse, in the case of the X5 everyone can see what you did every time you use it.

We already know they don't really like driving and probably don't really know or care much about cars. They drive X5's.
So your point is what exactly?

Could well be, or to amuse others by demonstrating their monumental lack of knowledge, taste and style. A bit like those 'mong' boots and velour leisure suits the female X5 drivers seem to like wearing.

What's most amusing is that they seem bothered enough to comment defensively what others think about their car purchase. Probably 'cos there is a large grain of truth in it.

Firstly, they probably don't a seconds thought to what others (no, not even you Rabid) think about their choice. Why the hell should they ?

Secondly, a lot of these cars are bought for their more commanding driving position with it's superior view (Oh look, the 5 series isn't better at everything !) and a mistaken assumption that bigger automatically = safer.
I am sure you already knew this but chose to ignore it in your need to "comment defensively" regarding your car purchasing choice when discussing poeple who obviously walked straight past all the 5-series' in the showroom to buy their X5s.

See, it is easy to criticise other peoples choices, but ultimately it is unsatisfying since it it an utterly pointless exercise and we end up looking like a ****.

The best car for the purpose, as has been stated before on this very thread, is the one the customer wants, not what some 3rd party on a BBS thinks they should have. That isn't always a 5-series. Learn to live with it.

(No BMW axe to grind, haven't owned one for >15 years, in fact, bizarrely for SN, one of my cars is actually a Subaru )

lol they can own what they like, think what they like and ignore what they like.
My opinion is an X5 is a car generally purchased for what I see as the wrong reasons. I've also explained why I think that's the case. They can take it or leave it without it bothering me one iota. Neither do I expect my opinion to affect anyone's choice of car or perception of it. Someone asked the question and I answered.
As for looking like a **** (which I wouldn't agree with but hey that's your perception and you're welcome to it)- Am I bovvered? 'cos I 'aint. Otherwise I wouldn't drive a BMW would I?

I love it - the X5 is a car purchased for the wrong reasons. Excellent comment - although I am unsure how you can expect to know what everyone's comment, reasoning or thoughts are? Makes me laugh.

I have a Scooby and it's OK. I'd like an X5 and certainly one of our next cars probably will be an X5. The missus likes them and that's her choice. I like the idea of my kid(s) being in a larger vehicle when taken to school than a 1970's Mini for example. Bigger is not automatically better - but against a 1970 Mini it WILL be. Against a massive truck it will not have a hope. But against a massive truck it's better than a Mini.

It;s got nothing to do with prestige or anything. If she likes the looks of them, and many many people buy a car for price, servicing, dealership locality, looks etc without caring how they drive as for many people, it has a limited impact on them compared to other items. AWD (which is different to many on here who quote 4WD on a Scooby) gives some benefits, but has drawbacks like additional fuel consumption.

If I like the X5 and I want one, and I can afford one, I'll buy one. Who cares that it's classified as on off-roader - just because it has the ability to go off-road doesn;t mean it has to be classified as one. Your Scooby has the ability to do 0-60 in 5 or secs. Does that mean every time you drive it you do this...

Some people make me laugh...

Surely the same thing could be said about the Impreza and the Legacy... Why would you pick the Impreza over the Legacy then?

Pick an Impreza your an idiot???

Or maybe, you open your mouth and automatically look like an idiot?

They chose to look uncool by their choice of clothing , you do it by posting nonsense on the internet. Again its all about choice.

I'm sure the Hampshire X5 crew will be crying into their freshly squeezed when they read this...ooohhh I forgot they probably don't spend their day trying to justify to the internet world that they bought the right car. They just bought it and drive it
