Some of these responses are really funny, thanks for the laughs

I'll reply to a few of your short sighted points

1.uncool by posting it on the internet- your opinion which is cool. However there is one plus point, people don't see how uncool I am every time I drive my car

2.Impreza and Legacy- I have no idea don't have either, have no need for either and wouldn't pick either. Had no idea the Legacy shared the same platform/range of engines as the Impreza either.

3. X5 bought for the wrong reason?
As it's objectively worse at the job of being a car (unless you need 4x4) than a 5 the only real reason for buying one is perceived good image. As it actually has a p1ss poor image and many people automatically assume the driver is a **** that reason doesn't apply.

This is a discussion forum and the idea is to discuss topics, not keep your mouth shut for fear of offending someone with what I see as absolute sh1te taste in cars. If you were bigging up Cliff Richard I'd do exactly the same thing.

"If you were bigging up Cliff Richard "

Cliff Richard and X5 drivers....do you just issues with people more successful than you despite their image problems?

I'd agree Cliff Richard is a success, although I think he's a crap old fruit with little talent, viewed objectively.
X5 drivers succesful? where do you get that idea from, as I see it they are no more than wannabe Cayenne drivers. Of course I could have an X5 but then again I know a little bit about cars..........

Enjoying your X5?

i still dont understand how you can state that these vehicles are bought for the wrong reason...?!

its a massive generalisation, that assumes that all X5's are bought by middle class mothers specifically to do the school run...???

thought I'd explained it well

Many people buy them for the image, the image stinks therefore it's the wrong reason.

Would be a bit like having a stickered up Impreza to look cool and impress the neighbours ie pointless as it actually does the opposite.

Ahh a 5 series eh. What does that do that a 3 series can't? What do you think the 5 Series says about you?

I could bang on about you being a moron who doesnt use his indicators just because you drive a Beemer, but I wont. You had a choice to get the 5 Series just like someone else has the choice to buy an X5... Why would I think someone driving a 5 series is cool yet those in an X5 is a cvnt? I wouldnt they both get the same level of respect off me, at that is depending on how they drive the damn thing.

BTW, You mentioned your car yesterday, I dont recall ever single post I read on SN.

But the same logic applies to all BMWs, have you neglected to see all the threads on here bashing the BMW drivers? So you picked the wrong choice when you could have chosen something else.... ?

........and if you wanted a 4x4 there are far better choices.

Of course almost nobody does it for these reasons. I can't think of anything more crass than an X5 on massive rims, sport suspension and the ******** behind the wheel thinking "everyone knows I'm a success now".

Oddly enough when I went to collect the lease car from the BMW garage the dealer turned up in his X5. I told him what I thought about them, how owners perceive they have a good image, yet others seem to have a different idea. He agreed with me to some extent and said that the image was on the slide due to the amount of scumbags buying them.
Made even more amusing by my collection of a Bavarian mondeo. Aspirations to BMW ownership- HAHAHAHAHAHA! You gotta be joking?

I picked a BMW because it was dirt cheap to lease, RWD and tax effecient while being powerful. the image is absolute toss. Not a 5 either.

Oh and as I keep saying I don't give a flying **** about my cars image, unlike the X5 massive........Neither do I care about what others think of it, Just wanted to share an opinion on a discussion forum rather than offend or injure the egos of some sad w@nkery X5 driving 'look at me I'm a success' types.

The only really succesful people I know tend to drive stuff like Fiat 500's.

PMSL at some of these replies!!!

When i see woman on the school run in a X5 i just think...why???

Don't see the point in having a big car that you can't drive!!! I live opposite a school, and watching the parents try and park/drop off kids makes me laugh!!! They really have no idea!!!

this is true...to drive a car that you can barely handle even at a basic level defies belief, but even when we see this happening we dont know that individuals personal reasons for buying that car do we...?!

unless we do a poll of all X5 drivers and 90% answer that they bought it to look good on the school run...!!!

It's called stereotyping we all do it. I've already said that there are probably some really nice, humble, socially responsible X5 driving people out there who bought it 'cos they like sitting up high and it was available in a nice colour.
However all the ones I see out and about tend to be the kind of 'look at me I'm a success' ********* that we've seen here on this thread. My message to them is this

You aren't impressing anyone other than other crass attention seeking, no taste, no knowledge, class system "considerably richer than yow" types. Which I suppose is probably the point for them. Everyone else thinks you're d1cks.

I went past the school I originally posted about this morning and it was hilarious, there were six 4x4 type vehicles all trying to get in or out of this little side road getting themselves in a right kerfuffle!

the irony here is i can actually see the point youre trying to make...how do you know though that the ones you see out and about are the stereotypes to which you refer...?!

would it not be fair to say that they would be having a drama whatever vehicles they were in...is it not just their standard of driving which is more questionable than their vehicle of choice...?!

accepted that if they all drove micras there might not be such a problem...!

You don't know so you have to assume that the driver is one of the good 'uns. Unless they prove otherwise by their attitude or posting BS about 'being successful because I have an X5' on scoobynet, in which case they fit into the 'deluded ****' stereotype I've outlined.

Another thing- if the X5 was cheaper to lease than my current car and better for the purpose I'd have one no problem. I just wouldn't kid myself that it has a good image or that it didn't scream w@nker to most other people.

Maybe people buy X5 because they can afford that luxury. If you came into some money or worked your **** off to have a comfortable income, would you drive around in a banger or would you buy a car not just fit for the purpose, but one thats a bit of a luxury? Why do I drive a pestige marque when a bogo cheap basic car will still do the job? Because I like my *** off to get to where I am today and I feel entitled to a bit of luxury in life.

X5 doesn't offer anymore luxury than a 5. Buy what you like, just don't kid yourself that others will think you're somehow 'successful' because you drive a common as muck 'luxury marque' with an image as desireable as a detached mock tudor house in Winsford.

I'm sure some successful people do drive X5's. They probably don't define success as driving an easily achievable target like BMW X5 ownership though.

I cant think of a better car for the women you are moaning about. They have a life that relvolves around their kids and the friends, their husbands work hard so they have the money to buy what they want - the people they socialise with all like X5's, they like X5's...they enjoy being in their X5's...............as long as they have the right colour in stock they are making a PERFECT choice. The fact they dont sit around with their mates laughing at how a 5 seriers is for someone that cant afford an X5 shows they are less narrowminded than you!

T

ps- dont have an X5, my last car was a 540 sport - best car i ever had and never meet anyone who didnt like it, i'm sure there are people out there who didnt like the image.....but i dont know them so what do i care?

The only thing they are successful at is filling in a credit application form. Otherwise they would still be driving around in old estate cars.

Wait until interest rates start rising, there will be a sudden glut of 'slightly used' gas guzzling 4x4s with dented tailgates on the market that nobody wants.

"an easily achievable target like BMW X5"

I think most people would consider the purchase of a £40k + car as being something to be proud of.

But you dont know that theyve bought it to look successful, youve already admitted that by saying you have to presume they think that??? WTF...
