thats an interesting point of view, you've certainly moved the debate forward.
So, to recap, to make yourself very unpopular on Scoobynet, drive an X5,
Somehow, I dont think things are quite as simple, there are perfectly ordinary law abiding moderate X5 drivers and there are outside lane hogging, Disabled space parking, agressive, rude, intolerant X5 extremist nutters. and these are the ones that need rooting out and sending back to the Proton dealership. The Police are reluctant to prosecute these people as they are afraid of the backlash, they have good representation and can be very clever, I personally think a week in a Saab would calm them down.

I need to get an X5 just to make a bunch of losers on a website so angry....
12 pagers of hate for a car and it's owners

I guess that is fairly insignificant to the pages and pages slagging off Impreza drivers on this and other BBS.

to be delivered 1 series

Mixing the ugly, overpriced, can't afford a "real" BMW tosser image with the big, overpriced, image obsessed BMW tosser image

That combination should make them go apoplectic

There is one parked outside my office at the moment in a dark metalic gray with the big BWM rims, no chrome, no blacked out windows and it looks very, very nice and night and day removed in the class stakes than the cheap nasty looking blobeye sport wagon in WR blue parked behind it..

I can't pin point my dislike for the car. Actually I don't think it is the car, it's not jelousy, as I regulary enjoy the equivelent 5-series counterpart (which is a better drivers car) and its not fashion or desire, as my preference is small super light cars with huge engines, and not wallowy pseudo off-roaders.
I think it is more so the "type" of person I typically find driving them, granted, not everyone is the same but you can't ignore demographic tendencies
As I like BMWs, but I can argue that the brand, amongst others attracts certain types of poeple to buy then. I think the best label for the types of poeple I'm trying to describe are the "plastic poeple" or "plastic society", the ones who ride on a whim of fashion and like to think they are more than they really are - both mentally and physically. The poeple I love to show up for their true worth (a bad and rude, but amusing habit, I will admit
).
I'm tempted to start a Mini thread - is it me or do people tend to drives these as if they are "small" cars (which they are clearly are not...compared to an old Mini), forcing their way through gaps only big enough for mopeds.

Ali, very nicely summed up, I suppose its a case of the X5 being a good vehicle but a lot of 'car' people dont want to be associated with that much negative baggage (does that make us equally shallow), I suspect as prices drop it will get worse. Part of me likes them, but it does make me slightly queasy seeing ranks of them outside TK-Maxx, why ffs would you buy a 40 grand car to go and root through 5 year out of date 'designer' tat, or perhaps thats the point, its got to have a label for some.
I do sympathise with the more knowledgeable, urbane, empathetic, enthusiast X5 driver, I expect if I had one I would have to explain why I bought it and why I am not really like that and no my shirt isnt from TK-Maxx.
Despite all the protestations, the X5's image is probably the most polarising fact about it, you either would sell your granny for one or not be seen dead in it, how is it the Volvo XC90 doesnt illicit such opinions because its just as big, I see an XC90 and I think, hmmm, quite nice those, is it perhaps because the typical owner is less aggressive ?
However there is some relief for the X5 owner, the Cayenne is getting more common and the Range Rover sport is flashtastic and thrusty looking, I am expecting great things from its drivers, saw one mount the kerb to get past traffic in a busy shopping street the other day.
