Again, what does this stat mean? 140% of what? Supposing the average walking pace is 1mph, if that increased by 140% to 2.4mph. That's hardly gonna lead to people crashing into everyone everywhere.

When quoting %ages, you must give a reference class else the stat is potentially meaningless.

That's why I posted the link to the current atmosphere composition. The curent methane content is in there. Work it backwards.

Our atmosphere

And I also found this:

Methane is very strong greenhouse gas found in the atmosphere. Methane concentrations in the atmosphere have increased by more than 140 % since 1750. The primary sources for the additional methane added to the atmosphere (in order of importance) are: rice cultivation, domestic grazing animals, termites, landfills, coal mining, and oil and gas extraction.
As I say - the driving forces for our climate are complex, things we think are having an effect may not be having so much of an effect as we think and other things may be a far bigger issue. Or there may be no issue at all.

I would say that in common with most people posting in this thread, I just do not have the real knowledge to say whether we are undergoing a natural world climate change or whether it is all down to pollution and how we are using up the world's resources. I do see what is presented as evidence, such as the recently reported diminution of the Greenland ice fields and I have to say it is a worry for the future.

Most governments actually do things which appear to produce a comparatively instant result, or appear to, and the things that may happen years after they have left power and responsibilty for them has long gone go on to the the back burner and are only discussed tentatively if they can use it for their own advantage.

All the posturing about global warming and the excuses for charging everyone more money one way and another would carry a lot more weight if they were to do something about the gross pollution caused by the incredible amount of burned fuel products dispersed in the atmosphere by the enormous amount of airline flying in the world that takes place every single day.

It begs the question when not only is there no tax on aircraft fuel in this country, but they are also intending to increase the capacity of our major airports to enable a vast increase in passenger throughput in the near future.

Like others have said, I don't think many people really have the scientific knowledge/facts at their disposal to comment lucidly on this topic. Even the experts seem to disagree about just about everything in this field, and one should bear in mind that many of these experts are funded by organisations with agendas...

However, one thing I would have thought most people could agree on is that melting ice caps/rising sea levels, destruction of rain forests, massive increases in pollution from China, etc, are not exactly positive factors in man's future survival, nor are they going to make the world a nicer place to live in...

I believe that is a world wide agreement rather than just something the UK does. Is it not something to do with all that legal mumbo jumbo stuff which is written on the back of your airline tickets? (Chicago something or other?)

Anyway, didn't you used to fly something which produced more black smoke than anything else I've ever seen?
