Interesting to see the defence for games prices.

But along with music/films etc....In demand software retails at a hell of alot more money than something 6months+ old.

Now I don't discount that software is cheap to make...it isn't, like films, making them isn't cheap either (perhaps the actors should take a pay cut? ).

But I know that even though you find a old game in the bargain bucket, I know that they are not being sold at a loss and still making profit abielt to a lesser extent.

It's all about recovering overheads ASAP, nobody is willing to allow a price drop in fear that their overheads may never be recuperated. Even though cheaper prices "may" equate to higher sales and out-pricing piraters. The accountants don't have the ***** to find out

As a result, I now buy most of my games second hand when they have been through their boom period and are cheaper and plentiful.

I think that could be a personal thing though having played games for a little over 20 years I'm used to most genres. The RPG storylines and character building keep me interested moreso than the repetitive gameplay. It's hard to write something new and innovative these days which is why I find I'm playing games less and less

I've written a couple of (bad!) games in my time, although not commerically, and I'm well aware of ever expanding costs. Unfortunately, a lot of that appears to be on artwork and eye candy for nicer levels and the like, but still the same boggo gameplay. Take Tomb Raider for example, when it first came out, it was blinding, innovative, fun, etc. By the last installment it wasn't even worth buying as it was same old same old
Agreed,

the first tomb raider was stunning, had me hooked,!!

the second?? what has running round paris got to do with tombs??

the third dire

angel of? ive loaded ot run around for abit, and might go back..

then you get classics that are just amazing,,, Ico for one, final fantasy 7

well over 100 hours of gameplay and kept me engrossed for weeks...

rpg,s the old tsr series, mu nipper couldnt believe i spent almost a year playing one on the Amiga..

compare it to this..

he bought perfect dark for the 360 came 4 days after its release.. that would be the 6th? i picked him up for chrimbo on the 16th and he had finished it!! not a lot of time to spend on a 'premium' title'

he got halo 2 on tuesday, finished it today,

now is that because the games are so simple, or is it they are becoming so easy and not very difficult??

to me a game should last at least 24-48hrs min. not some of the 8-10 offerings we see today.

i believe edge summed it up,

"back in the eightys we had addictive games with a very steep learning curve, three lives and thats your lot"

today we have infinite save points, multiple lives, & difficulty options, are these value added? or just enableling a game to be on the shelves and meeting a particular pattern.

Ok, just checked the RRP on 360 games is £44.95 so only £20 quid to the retailer, which means that Amazon is probably still making £15 minus the postage when they sell at £39...

The Developer usually gets a similar amount to the Vat Man, Which is why the Publishers/Developer combos are more attractive to big companies if their internal dev teams aren't to over bloated and on huge money

This is the start of my 20th year in the industry, during that time I've been involved in 15+ games, only 3 have made money/royalties beyond the original development costs. I've known quite a few people who have Never made bonuses despite working on some quite good games.

Middle management and retailers take the biggest share, Roll on downloadable games as the norm. Steam is the future...

Cheers
