I've got an XP2500+ o/c'd (and stable) @3200+
Still getting along with a 9800pro, would I see a dramatic improvement if I went for as good as I could afford AGP card or would my CPU be too much of a bottle neck?

Exactly the same as me m8, I upped the card to an x800 XT PE and it made a big difference. I must say though the limiting factor with BF2 now is ram....anything over 1024x768 needs more than a gig of ram and there is nothing more infuriating than your hd accessing when trying to fly a plane e.t.c upside down moments galour!!

It's a POV card - I bought it purely cos it was the cheapest at the time, although I've seen overclockers doing teh BFG for £189 + VAT now.

The machine also has 2GB of RAM, and an Athlon 3000+ running at 2520Mhz which both probably help!

Cheers for the advice Can't justify spending £££'s on completed upgrading the PC but could maybe get away with another graphics card

Bit confused about all the different flavours. Is this one ok? MSI X800 Pro-VTD256 8xAGP TV-Out Dual VGA VIVO TV-Out DVI

Quite like the idea of the video in so I can connect the consoles to it.

You'd still benefit from a better GPU, like an X800XL or 6800GT.

As you're not running dual channel mem, may be worth up'ing memory to 1.5Gb (assuming your on 2x512Mb currently).

On 64 player maps at higher details (like the X800XL / 6800GT will run), BF2 can use up to 1.2Gb of mem!

I'm running 2Gb largely because the memory runs in dual channel mode (2x1Gb modules). Has helped with games like BF2, Q4 and FEAR (although Q4 probably doesn't need it tbh).

PS. btw Nvidia are launching a new 7800 soon, potentially called 7800Ultra, with 512Mb ram onboard... not much change out of 500 quid!

ATi has finially managed to ship the X1800XL (7800GT) equiv, but the X1800XT(256 and 512Mb) have yet to hit the stores (eta mid November). On paper the XT beats the GTX, not by a huge amount but a convincing lead (see www.anandtech.com 's FEAR GPU round-up), although the XL doesn't beat the GT it seems. Its unclear from Anandtech's review whether this is the 256 or 512mb XT card.

Think I have 1.5Gb of ram already. To be honest, it plays BF2 fine at 1024x768. Not sure what the vid quality settings are but it doesn't look hideous.
Having said that, I've not see BF2 running on max to compare it to

The main thing is running everything at max with maximum anti aliasing, it looks superb... You will see a difference going from a 9800pro -> X800XL in games like BF2 and especially FEAR.

But if you've got 1.5Gb, your sorted memory wise.

Or wait and go full PCI-E + skt 939, or wait until Q2/3 '06 and go skt M2 + DDR2 + PCI-E x16(x16 x2 in SLI - currently SLI only supports 2x PCI-E x8 mode).

PS. sorry main difference with a better card will be ability to use more AA and AF.

If you buy the X800 Pro with VIVO you can flash the BIOS on it : this opens up the extra texture pipelines and increases the core and memory speeds to that of the X800 XT Platinum Edition.

Although there has been a lot of success with this method - there have also been complete card failures as a result and you're on dodgy ground with warranty claims. Club 3D used to be good ones for flash from memory.

I thought all the recent X800 VIVOs couldn't be flashed at all... I'd check it out thoroughly first

How would you know though without trying to flash it (and consequently buggernig it up)?

oh and I'm really sorry, I seem to have completely hijacked the thread.

Exactly - just wanted to make sure you knew it wasn't a 'given' that the flash would work. Some have flashed, then flashed back to original bios ok, but equally some have ended up with 200 odd quids worth of dead GFX card.

No worries re the high jack... its all related.. sort of.

Yep, but if there was an 'Advanced Teamkilling with Artillery' badge I'm pretty sure I'd have that one by now

LOL - you and quite a few others

I wasn't playing well last night at all, trying to get my Saitek gamers keypad configured correctly, took several attempts to short list the keys i need..
Was also trialing my new G5 mouse, which again, took several attempts to get the response times right...

Last game went ok thou

Couldn't get on last night, was finishing a couple of downloads so my ping would have been pap.
Will get on for Thursdays game though!

An update of my computer upgrade saga, I've offered my base unit to a mate so that I can start a new build with Nforce 4 mobo and PCI-E to keep me going on the upgrade path, rather than keep going with AGP. It's about time I had a new PC anyhow, not done owt with it since buying a 9800pro a year and a half ago!

Well if you want to keep your AGP card and upgrade to PCI-E later try the Asrock 939Dual SATA2 motherboard, it has both slots and the chipset is up there with the nforce4 boards too.

Dr Evil - good choice of keyboard, I have one of those too, but I haven't even bothered trying to program the additional keypad yet. It's a shame you can't bind keys to specific team commands instead of having to use the crappy 'command rose' thing. If that was the case I'd probably be using the keypad now.

I'm warming to the Saitek keyboard/keypad - was using a Zboard with BF2 keyset... great idea, but poorly executed (very poor quality unit).

The Saitek is very well put together and love the blue back light - matches my tower (window'd with UV / blue).

Will take me a while to get used to the set-up , but the keypad is good for putting the main game keys on.

Would recommend you get:

ASUS A8N-SLI premium (silent NF4 cooling via heat pipe - believe me the deluxe version has a LOUD fan)

2Gb (2x1Gb modules) to make the most of your 7800GT in the newer games.
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit CAS3 approx £160
Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX (2x1GB) CAS2 approx £210

I've got the Corsair one, runs at 2-3-3-6@DDR400 1T on the A8N-SLI premium

PS.

AMD64 4000+ will be best for gaming due to it being 2.4Ghz/1Mb L2 (basically an FX53 with SSE3 support and 90nm).

But you may want to consider the X2 range, X2 3800 or X2 4400, budget permitting,
if you have a tendency to do lots of things at once on the system.
