Back to the original topic;

Those old 8-valve 900 turbo engines are serious pieces of kit, and classic 900's don't weigh as much as you'd think. Have got a 1978/79 145bhp/ 177lb/ft saab 99 turbo (basically same engine as 8 valve 900 turbo) and it bloody flies when on the move! 0-60 is only around 8.5, but through the mid-range I would have no qualms in racing a clio sport.
The old dear also has comic value; funny looking old car from the 70's just won't stop bothering your rear view mirror! The 99 also pulls quite hard all the way to 123mph (i know - trust me!) until it runs out of revs in top gear (only a 4 speed box).

Now my soon-to-be 250bhp 16v 900 turbo is a different matter indeed................

I have the 9-3 LPT and for only 150 bhp I am amazed at how well it pulls, I suspect that now its a bit older (2001) its run in and is perhaps a bit more than standard, had a go with a Boxster on the way home from the lights, 54 plate and it sounded like it had the tiptronic box but it took until 70 mph to pull a car length or so (it was a girl driving but it was howling), the car, not the girl, 3rd gear roll on from 40 - 80 it just wasnt any quicker, keep wondering whether mines already been chipped as it feels pretty much the same as my old Volvo T5.

Turbotroll, perhaps post a thread about your 900, sounds interesting.

Here's some info on the car;

1990 900 Turbo 16 valve 's', 2 door hatch

original spec - 175bhp 201 lb/ft of torque

Had a stage one conversion carried out by Trent Saab/TSL consisting of

- Uprated APC
- Rising rate fuel pressure regulator
- Uprated wastegate actuator
- Intercooler fan
- Aluminium re-circ dump valve
- Uprated PCV check valve
- 2 1/2" Stainless exhaust

This gave around 235 bhp and around 255 lb/ft of torque and a sub six second 0-60 (gearbox willing!). Mid-range pull was out of this world.

The car is currently having a front end re-build after some heavy corrosion was found in the engine bay due to battery acid.

Due to have it back on the road in November with the following spec.

- Retain Trent Saab APC, wastegate actuator, PCV valve
- Install front mount evo-6/7 intercooler
- Open air intake
- Atmospheric dump valve (as i'm a big kid)
- 3.3 bar fixed fuel pressure regulator
- 3" JT exhaust with performance downpipe
- 5th fuel injector set-up

The stock turbo is remaining (Mitusibishi TE025).

From similair set-ups, it should be good for a gear box shredding 250 bhp/ 275 lb/ft. Although to be fair, I've never had a box problem in any of my Saabs.

To say I'm looking forward to driving it again is an understatement!

I did a dales run in my clio cup ...which i know is a lot lighter than the std 172 but had similar power... there were a group of us..me a mate in an ra and an evo4 and then the cumbrian bunch... i led most of the af .. and we enttered one of the bypasses we drove on and a sti 2 deciedd to have aplay with me.. and i have to say ... it was neck and neck... so feel the clios do deserve a bit of respect as they are truly awesome

a Clio keeping with a 250bhp WRX surely not!!!!!!
mmmm, a scooby at 250 bhp. no chance, now when i had my 2.0 corsa gsi. 187 bhp, i gave a 2.0 sport a run for its money.the cleo pulled at first, but when i slamed in second got in front, and left it. could still see it in the mirror though, now i have my scooby. not a chance. 265 bhp, and ive raced one too, simerler to my corsa... pulled at first,( scoobys are slow at start ) but once the turbo kick in. killed it. unfair realy, got a tdo5 bolted on me scooby.. . i still rate them clio 2.0 16v/ simerler to them pug 180s, there quick to, you need to look at every car different. a turbo car is better for mid range power to top. cleos ect good at bottom.......

40 car lengths at 5 metres a length = 200 metres ,big gap that.................perhaps it was 30 car lengths at 4 metres a length making 120 metres,, hmmmmmmmm BIG difference there ,,,best just say you pulled a big gap and leave it at that .

These threads are total poo ,,perhaps thats why they are so much fun to read.

Read a posted like this last year, I had a MY03 WRX with PPP at the time. So booked a test drive at my local renault dealership in their 182....All i can say is, it felt very slow compared to my WRX.If i had any doubts about the performance of the 182, I had them confirmed a few days later when a 182 wanted to play. Needless to say my WRX pulled away and he was never seen again.

So your WRX with 2k's worth of mods was faster than a standard 182? My 172 Cup has an exhaust, filter, de-cat and RSPORT ECU needless to say I would tear a WRX PPP a new ar$e hole from a rolling start.

Seems very unlikely you would "tear a WRX PPP a new ar$e hole" from a rolling start. You would need a large power/weight advantage to do that. Why not post a video of you doing it if you are so confident?

Scrap the 250 bhp; my old 900 is now getting a GT28RS disco potato & a set of forged pistons - now that's a hot hatch!

What BHP is a Bug with PPP? I had several races with my m8s classic which had around 260bhp and from a 50 roll it would take a fair bit over 100 b4 he would pull (usually when I would get into 5th)

240 something. WRX would be quicker though there'd be very little in it.

Comical, how an 18 grand "monster" has to have upgrades to out perform a standard Clio. PMSL.

Yep, get Scoob and look like a Chavvy Guinea Pig, as that what the general impression appears to be, get a Clio and be prepared to spend some time in a loan car, get a Saab and start reading the Guardian.

I'm sure that there is *some* logic to what you have just said.

A 5 year old, 2 grand motorbike would be quicker than both - not realy the point though is it brains.

http://www.btinternet.com/~paulj.ewi...cupvsscoob.WMV

Raced these guys like 3 times each and never lost. They weren't launching their cars full bore so were in serious trouble right from the off, as soon as I put it into 2nd I was pulling a good car on the red WRX. One time he beat me off the line easy I then proceeded to pull on him the whole way up the track and took him at about 90 mph (so not just mid range)

P.S this is a Cup with an exhaust,de-cat and a R sport ECU (now has a Maxogen) Car was RR at 181 hp and 155 lbft in that spec (most impressive time its done with 181 hp is 14.2@101) Its about to get some "proper" mods on it in the new year, modded head, inlet manifold and cams about to be fitted (will see it to around 205 hp and 175-180 lbft)

The scoobs there obviously were not trying, they were just out for a leisurely Sunday drive

Does anybody who buys a Clio or WRX actualy think they are sports cars though? I'd have thought either was looking for a day to day car you can fit 4 (smallish people )adults in while still being able to shift fairly quickly. Those videos just prove that driver skill is everything.

Amazes me how these threads go on, and on....

One cannot argue with stats. A 172 Cup is a faster car than a new-age WRX. End of.

That's what differentiates you from a select group of WRX owners that just do not and WILL NOT accept certain truths.
