renault clio sport could not pull on my old saab

now dont get me wrong here im not sure he was full on trying but i expected a different outcome.

was having a little play with a renault 2.0 16v sport, which i know are very quick little cars.

both slowed down to 40 mph for a speed camera, and he was on my bumper, i had 3rd gear lined up and give full chat, i moved over to the inside lane and he stayed on the outside, and the best it could do was stay with me, if anything i may have pulled a little on him.

i was in an 87 saab 900 turbo 8 valve full pressure turbo.

so on paper im 155 bhp 1300 kg, the renault is 172 and a lot lighter.

dont get me wrong as i allready said i know what would happen if i raced it from the lights.

was it because i had more low down grunt and he never had time to redline the clio ?.

im bemused.

I used to have a 172 exclusive and I can say for sure that it was one fast little motor. The fastest car I had driven til now and I used to have a BMW 328I sport followed by a V6 4motion Golf. The clio was bland and green but by eck did it shift. In the tight twisties it was a match for the rb5 but once the tubo kicks in hard it is a different story. I know as my mate bought the clio off me.

Still I have an awful soft spot for the clio sport range, the new 182 and trophy rage look great. Shame they have a gay image. I've never lived it down yet! Then again my mate has it now, poor bu**er, the ecu went down last month!

chris n`nic 03 August 2005 09:12 AM

Does seem a bit wierd m8...are you sure it was a 172? More power and less weight should have had him coming past really....

Same thing happened to me tonight i was tailgated really badly by one. I mean i could see the gold sovereign rings on there fingers. I put up with it for a while and when the traffic cleared i gave them a wave goodbye (heads up boys) 80-145km/h in 4th never bothered changing down to third slotted the old girl in 5th kept my foot in for 5-6 seconds looked in the mirror and a nice 30-40 car gap. Point proven.

chris n`nic 04 August 2005 11:46 AM

What car was that in m8? My Cup will happily stay with 250bhp Wrx from 40 to over 100. (proven on several occasions with my m8) lol @ 30-40 car lengths

kmh *cough

my findings also. not tried standing start, but the range you mentioned was nothing in it (also tried several times).

The Chief 04 August 2005 01:21 PM

Evo this month it pitches a Clio 182 Trophy against a bloody M6 not surprisingly the M6 batters it on any given straight but on twisty roads the Clio is apparently all over it like a rash! - the joys of good supension low weight and decent brakes!

a Clio keeping with a 250bhp WRX surely not!!!!!!:)

chris n`nic 04 August 2005 01:55 PM

lol I managed a 5.8 0-60 (proper timing not stopwatch or Gtec!) so from a standing start it wouldn`t be too far behind, although you`d get consistantly better times with a 4wd. I`ve managed a 14.1 @ 97.5mph so my 0-100 is probably very low 15`s. Take out the usual launch advantage and the difference is pretty small......of course a few choice mods and the scooby will be flying past...damn turbos! :)

chris n`nic 04 August 2005 03:58 PM

Well if I was racing someone I would have given up long b4 that distance! What car was it in?

mikeGG 04 August 2005 04:02 PM

Not this again. I argued till I was blue in the face over on Cliosport that my current 241 bhp WRX is faster than my old Clio 182 but for some reason they would not believe me evn though I have owned both. In fact Ive had 2 Imprezas now!

CRABBY1972 04 August 2005 04:32 PM

Chris

30-40 car lengths was me being conservative as well. Not sure how fast i was going the speedo only goes to 160mph.

I slowed down at the next r-about and got stuck in traffic, he cut across three lanes of traffic to get ahead. Crazy. I dont think he will be trying to push people out of the way so often anymore. Bad form i reckon.

chris n`nic 05 August 2005 12:14 AM

I`ll ask again...what car have you got m8y? The fact that you had to slow at 160bhp tells me that it ain`t 240-260 bhp so it really doesn`t matter how much you beat the clio......I have on several occasions had a go with my m8s and there is nothing in it! At one point he had 4 people in when I had to (which makes a difference but the way you are talking it should still paste me) and I had 2 people. 60 roll and he accelerated 1st and i started to come past at about 80-90. The thing with turbos is that the fact that the power comes in one big lump makes it feel much quicker. If you were to have 240 bhp all at one point and I have 192 bhp but more spread through the rev range then mine would obviously feel slow. I would gladly meet anyone in the northwest with a 240bhp scooby and have a play from 50>....just give me a few weeks to get my new engine run in...only 200 miles on this so far so is still very tight

Chris

Mines got over 240bhp, will that do? ;) its only running a panel filter btw :D

You will beat very few scoobs on here if you talking standard because no one on here keeps there scooby standard for long :D

leonpoole 05 August 2005 01:44 AM

Anyway why do people think that clio's, ctr's, ibiza's, new wrx's, leon's, 206 180's are these super quick cars when they are not.
Point granted they are nippy. Fast they are not so why be suprised when any of the above keep up with you

Very nice motor m8y! Although I don`t see the point of you`re initial post....

Lol @ Point proven....big power turbo is faster than a 2lt na, just couldn`t see it myself http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/images/icons/icon12.gif

Nick Read 05 August 2005 10:12 AM

LOL keep up the good work Chris. Clio 172/Cup/182 are remarkably quick if you've never been in one or raced one. Plus remember that they are also quite a discreet motor; it's easy enough to badge up a 1.2 Dynamique to look like a 2.0, and only the biggest Clio fan would notice the difference and then only if they looked very hard at it.

Getting back to the point of the thread, my guess is that it was an imposter racing the Saab. In terms of power-to-weight there's not an awful lot between a 2.0 Clio and a 2.0T Scooby, especially once you're rolling, where not only does the Clio lose its FWD disadvantage, it may even be an ADvantage...less transmission loss.

This is true, but the WRX is a heavier car, its designed to do something different than a clio, and its more comfortable in the process ;)
Though transmission losses..... just dont think that the newer STi's with A-DCCD loose lots though transmission, you may be surprised as they loose as much if not less than most FWD cars ;)

Me too, i have owned both scooby and clio cup and my standard scooby would hammer my cup everyday of the week, regardless of scenerio or conditions, but some of the chavs on cliosport won't have it, because their new 182's compared to their old saxo's and nova's are quicker.

My cup was fun, don;t get me wrong, but in a straight line it lacked grunt and was ultimately guttless.

I reckon a remapped 130/150 tdi would give a 182 a going over.

chris n`nic 05 August 2005 01:28 PM

OMG What bhp is your std WRX?!!? I have on several occasions had a play with my m8s 260bhp (RR`d) and when he had 4 in I was coming past him from 50-100+.....so how can a std one `hammer` a cup...unless mine is some sort of super cup which I don`t believe it is. You are just getting daft now, why are cliosports all chavs? Keep on the topic m8, just becasue your scooby feels quicker I would like to bet that it wouldn`t hammer it at all!

Chris
