Searching for the perfect Chassis

Wife and daughter with me today, she has finally finished University so headed home to celebrate!
Mark:
2 meetings and 300 road miles old. Rears are a bit better
Scoob:
$$$$ needed for a box and slicks.
They are feather weight compared to the EVO's wheels.
Graham
Need to work hard tomorrow, especially under the bridge, flat in 3rd into the sweeping left...

Graham + Followers,
Learned a lot from today, first, the white cars seem to lead the way, aside from that it was good to meet up with the drivers in what will be my class when i hit the hills, i just hope my comments and feed back to Graham dont set him back too much, that was a very interesting line through pardon hairpin on your 3rd run, hung around till the finish (in the rain) to compare dry/wet times, fingers crossed for a dry sunday,.

It was slippy and I didn't expect what happened..the esses was worse, and Semi-circle was...'interesting'. The effects of the shower was taking it's grip!
Thanks for the help John, all comments are thought provoking and that is good!
See you soon.

I must admit today was ****.
First run in competition went quite well with a 2.11 start, and a time of 48.8 ish. Car felt good and the track was good too, but there were flaws in the driver's performance. The car fell off boost in one corner and a fluffed 1st to 2nd change didn't help things. The EVO was well ahead, and the Sumbeam was strangly far away.
Track conditions stayed constant and I had hoped for a '47' second run in the afternoon, but despite a crap start (2.4) the run seemed to go ok, but it fell as a 48.6 and the Sunbeam pinched a 48.1 so relagated to 3rd.
Absolutly depressing to say the least, so I'm NOT open to criticism and such like.
Still; the car was drivable home and no harm done, but what a dissapointment.
Anyone want a semi-fast Sti?
Time to refect and take stock and all that.
My 911 is suddenly coming back into focus.
Here are some vids of my 'performance'.
If you think you can do better come out and prove it.

Ps have taken a look at the videos, will get them to you as soon as i sort out how to do it..
These are the first of the numerous videos of your car Graham that really give any info as to what your car is doing.
My first impression is that you are so so late putting the power back in coming out of the corners. Very fast into the corners, and I really don't see how you could brake any later or better, and corner entry is good with what looks like very good turn-in. But all that good work appears to be lost on the exit of each corner, you are well past the apex before powering out.
I don't know if you've conditioned yourself not to even try feeding the power in sooner, or whether you're trying and the car isn't performing for you. But I think the final tweaks need not be in the form of a stronger gearbox, but in a car that allows you to power out much sooner, and retain the grip. Or try being a little slower and more controlled into the corner so you can get better drive out.

I can see what Paul means out of the corners. Not that I know what I talking about
I have now reconsidered my hillclimbing entry for next year....I'm not mad enough to do it
I couldn't be as commited into corners as you are!!
Keep up the work and it will pay in the end.
Either that or by an EVO!!

is it a touch of lag from a bigger turbo? ..maybe als needs to be employed...
as that is what keeps Roys 3037s going .....good photo from MLR http://www.photobox.co.uk/shared/pho...photo=57113120

The EVO was just 6/100 slower than the 700 bhp Quattro who was on slicks.
I focus on the EVO as he wins EVERY hill climb he enters (John Stevenson of the Midlands!) so is the target that i can never get close to.
The Impreza boosts at 1.5 bar at about 4600, and taking Paul's observations, when I hit the gas and wait the power comes in just when the max G is on the bend = tyres screaming and the car twitching. (you should try it in the damp/wet...)
Will make a concious (sp) effort to go 'slow-in' fast out on power.
Grrrrrr!

Sorry to hear you had a poor result but this needs to motivate you to improving your next performance.
I would be interested in watching some in-car footage, looking at your lines, braking points & when you put the power down (I make no claim to be an expert by the way)
What I have found useful is sharing the car, I have somebody to bench-mark my performance against. It would be interesting if you could get somebody like John Felstead to take the car for a blast and compare times, lines and even better if you could data log it.(Can you do this with an Apexi ECU?)
I think unfortunately if you really want to be competitive against very effective cars then your starting point needs to be either a RA or Spec-C
Imagine when I first sprinted a couple of years ago and my modded, lightened car running slicks was 4 secs slower than a road going P1 !!!

Its always tricky trying to find time from nowere
vid didnt look to bad
miles in the car will help
i always try to be neat around the nadgery stuff and full commitment on the quick stuff
rallying for me but similar techniques required
get the right feeling in the car and you can get the power on b4 the apex and explode from the corners
evo's will be a pain because they are naturally a very confidence inspiring chassi-they seem to sit down at the back like a good GP4 escort
how light have you got the scooby??
gutted the doors?
pollycar/perspex glass?
drilled everything to lighten?boot hinges etc
just thinking of the cost little or nothing but time mods
if you have done all that then milage in the carwill help which is hard wen your doing sub 60 second runs
as i said at start you didnt look to be doing much wrong the vids never show how early you on the power due to the sound delay
your tyres were working hard through the fast bits so there not much margine there
is barbon hillclimb this saturday?? the one near devils bridge kirkby lonsdale??

Darbo:
Yes, that's Barbon Manor. There on Sat, Harewood on sunday.
Just got back from a Motor Club meeting (we run Loton Park hillclimb) and some very learned drivers of Prescot were there.
ALL said the issue is getting the power on (rather than down) early.
The car is powerful.
There is a speed trap just after the bridge in the vids, and i am ony 3 mph slower under there than the EVO and that is with the EVO off the 64ft mark in 1.96 secs compared to my 2.4!
I think i need to grasp the driving side of this rather good car.
MarkA: understand what you say, but getting an entry in the Midlands is very hard, let alone for two. Jap tin-tops are not very popular with the Clubs...motorbike engined single seaters are.
My Impreza (and the EVO) are fully trimmed road going cars, NO lightening whatsoever, so i run 1273 KG and I think the EVO is a bit more, about 1400 so the power to weight is about the same.
Roy has 500 bhp ish, I have 400 ish.
It is meant to be a Road Going class of car, almost all the cars are driven there and are fully trimmed.
LOL @ David! Hope to see you at Harewood? I need a cleaver observer. Payment is a cup of expensive Coffee or a pint.
Thinking of finally hiring Curborough Sprint track and drive the bollo~ks off it with the throttle down at the right time.
