Graham, just a thought, I would try the 20g with the new close ratio box before you make your desicion on a smaller turbo. When I shift on my RA box around the redline it drops the next gear up in at about 6k revs. Which should greatly help the issue of lag.

Good point.
If the 20g is kept spinning then it really delivers.

I ran an early RA box when the engine was just like yours is/was at Shelsley and found it a real pita, and the Sti box was quicker on the score board.
Hope I'm doing the right thing with the Type R box.
Keeping the dccd now as I will need a good excuse when you are 2 secs ahead of me next year (and Paul is 4 seconds...)
Graham.

the short box is the only way to go you just have to wring its neck a bit and you will never be off boost, I would consider a standard 5th gear if your going to keep driving to and from other wise you will end up half deaf and skint like me from doing 75 mph at 5.5k revs in fifth for 100 miles odd to Loton watching the fuel needle move down at an alarming rate, I have only ever got out of 4th gear competeing at mira for a millisecond on the straight so I don't think it would ever affect you racing either.

I am very seriously considering taking my car off the road all together and going the shelled car out trailered route, I think the saving on tax, insurance, MOT, fuel and tyres would pay for the cost of the trailer in no time and it wouldnt be such a miserable drive to the further events, and of course open the door to making the car much more focused competition vehicle. That is of course providing you don't need tax and MOT for our class?

You and I are feeling the same way Rob.
The RA box was murder for the road runs to the hills, just crazy.
I do feel your much better speeds at Shels could be down to the better 4th from 3rd, and that hurt me a bit, or you could simply be faster out of top Esse!

In the 'good ole days' you needed Tax/MoT but that has gone away now.
Roached out = 100Kg less, Insurance/tax = a set of slicks each year (!) and 55 mph towing = the speed of the M5 from Prescott home!

Just need a heavy tow car.

Just been looking at Paul's blue car on his site, might be cheeky and go over to see it, but he may not welcome that too much!
The race car style is very appealing, and my/our cars are not worth too much nowadays either, so why not?

Just bought a full dccd controller!

Graham.

If you want to come and have a look Graham, you're welcome.

Car will be having repair/upgrades in the next week or so prior to Timeattack

This paticular circuit was well suited to the BMW, but he has driven the car a lot, and done the same sprint circuit last year. If my car had "only" 500hp and the response that would go with it, it would have been better. There were other things that cost me time, so don't be fooled into thinking that 500hp or whatever can't become the "perfect" package.

I would stick with your 20g, get the most out of short ratios, and if you need more oomph, get a larger motor.

Although not a fair comparison, I was the fastest scoob their by nearly 2 seconds, so it wasn't that bad on the twisties, especially for a drag car

Also this was the first time I had 0-64ft times. I was clocking consistent 1.90 (3 runs at exactly 1.90) but wasn't getting "good" launches due to not having DCCD locked like I do on 1/4 mile, and getting airbourne in 1st gear over a hump 30ft from the line, I had no launch control at all. With a tweaked setup and a good launch, I think sub 1.8 ought to be acheiveable on the flat.

Arrived at the same decision Picked up a trailer today. Stripping and modding planned for the winter months, so not long now

I was also at the sprint yesterday and for a drag car, Paul's looked a very good sprint car, sounded good too

Thanks for the 'invite' and the 'insight' too!
I will be Italy in 12 hours time to think hard about it all and butter the wife up too...but she knows what is coming!

Interesting end-of-season chat and has left me food for thought.

'See you all in 2 weeks'

ps Hired a Smart car for Italy, so will be going on about a sequential shifting box when back!

If I were you guys, with the exception of Rob, I would NOT strip my car completely out. It is a serious amount of work to do it properly, and not worth the gain you will get out of it. If I could have aircon, stereo and a little less noise, I would. But the reality is it's not what people want to see when they look at or compare "tuner" cars.

There is much you can do to reduce weight without sacrificing what makes your car what it is.

If I were to take my car off the road and run the trailered route it seems like a waste of potential not to strip it out properly, as you know its getting there as it is. With my car around the 1200kgs mark how much weight do you think i could get out of it? I need a new cage which i may get in a lighter material than my current. I also want a swirl pot so i can run 1/4 of a tank rather than the 3/4 minimmum i currently need to avoid starvation, that should see a nice saving.

I hope entries aren't too hard to come by next season!
Having just started competing this season I was looking forward to doing more events!
Do you think this will be for all championships?

Graham as I mentioned to you previously I'd be interested in a track get-to-gether as you suggest above.

Only 2 more events for me this season (missed Shelsley to go on hol - I know poor commitment) Prescott this weekend then Loton the following. Trying harder springs (50/45) on the exe-tc stuff with their top-mounts so looking forward to better times! - Hope to see some of you there.

Paul just wondered if you could maybe suggest a next step for me in developing my car? (spec below) Not sure what I'll enter next season so don't know whether 1a or 1b tyres yet. I was thinking 16g turbo with front mount, any thoughts?

I have an Sti RA 2 with the following spec........

Link ECU running about 1.4 max
Tubular Lagged Headers
De-cat Exhaust system and down-pipe
Slanted top mount intercooler with waterspray
Modified oil pump
Induction system
Walbro 255 fuel pump
Fuel pressure regulator
Parrallel fuel mod
Swayed cam timing
440 Injectors
Aeroquip fuel lines
Lightweight flywheel
4 Paddle clutch

Cheers

Martin

Prescott tommorrow, cars running great, see if I can catch my Brother in his freshly stripped out Evo 7 extreme S that just made 402bhp running 3 way AST's and my dad in his now 500bhp SWB Quattro with new found antilag courtesy of Powerstation. Oh and Roy will be there in his championship winning evo 5RS to put it all in perspective.

don't know if they hill climb in Spain.
here in Portugal I think there are a few runs, but never done any, just went one time to a rally-cross track and to the portuguese F1 grand prix track. ( unfortunelly now there is no F1 in Portugal... )

Nice weekends racing wet mornings and dry afternoons. Roy in the mega evo was moved classes so just my brother and dad to deal with, track only properly dry on the final run of the day where my brother took the win with a 48.06 on his first ever visit to the hill beating my 48.15, unfortunately my dad crashed in the esses hitting the armco quite hard and causing some serious damage to his car, he is fine though with only pride being dented. Wadsy was flying along also on his new rims getting quicker and quicker as the day went on.

Sunday saw torrential rain in the morning but hot from about 10am onwards, unfotunately not hot enough to dry the track under the trees and thee ess section and following 90 left remained damp all day but the rest of the track was dry enough for me to make an identical 48.15 and beat my brothers 48.29, a caterham super light weighing in at just 500kgs and putting out 220bhp took the win with a 46 something but Pete and i took second and third beating a bunch of other caterhams and westfields which was satisfying, our 4wd proabably giving us the edge in the damp ess section. The esses remained damp enough to catch out the New mini safety car which suffered the same fate as my dad and hit the armco in the same spot causing a fair bit of damage. Shouldn't laugh but it was funny.

Sorry for the thread hijack Graham but thought I'd hold the fort whilst your lapping up the sunshine in Italy (Git).

Rob.

Rob
Ta for the mention!
Good to meet you, brother and Dad, glad to hear it's not too grim.
I've got some video footage of you all, if you'd like me to mail it to you let me know. I'd have to do it in a few e-mails as the files are bigish!
Cheers

Just got back from a very sunny Italy and a 2 week tour in a hire Smart-for 4.
Tiptronic is really nice when not in a hurry.
Seems to have been frantic while away, and very sad to hear of the pranged Audi ...more welding again...

Next year is looking even tougher than I imagined; always thought Pete's EVO was silver! That is a killer time first time there. I was hoping it was silver as we could exclude him as the pre-requisite for the class is the 'White Car Class' so we could have chucked the fast bas~ard out from the start.

I've had some time to think about the car obviously and it will stay a road car.
I think I can get much more from the car/driver by mods to the driver's attitude and commitment plus a few well chosen mods along the way to tidy-up a few rough edges.

Looking back on the emails here I still am worried about getting entries, but only in the Midlands.
To my knowledge there will be:
Roy's evo
Pete's evo
Rob's RA
Bigbrakes's UK
Wadsey's RA
John's Cossie
Twemlow's WRX
Breard's EVO 3 (ex Jeff Stokes)
Zen RA
Mike Gale's Nissan
Me

That is a lot of Jap tinware for a meeting and I think there will be some Dear John letters for some of the meets as the other classes (especially the Locaterfield/Bike engine single seaters) are really big.

As an aside, went to the Ferrari complex on hols, and that was just so good, never has a town been so focused on one element, The Ferrari.
Even the roads are 'hedged' with red roses...

Now, maybe a 360 in Class C2 could be good?
Or maybe a V6 Alfa 156?

Graham.

Sorry Thomas! Just illustrating that the Jap tintops are growing too much.
John:

I'm still quickest Jap Scoob at Prescott but not by much!
Rob has gone quicker at Shelsley, and maybe Loton after today.

Thinking of making a hanging basket out of my Helmet for 2007.

Still, I need to be there to wind everyone up or they will all go to sleep!

Any news on Loton chaps?

Graham

I was car number 29 (Sat) and number 34 (Sun) but have had engine failure so was unable to attend.

It was raining very very heavily at Lawley on Sunday afternoon - but I know Brian Marshall (Porsche 924) was there and I will ask him how he got on later.

The RA is with David at API - winter fettling

Will be entering Shelsley in 2007.
