Searching for the perfect Chassis
Graham, perhaps I should have explained myself...I was suggesting a phase 2 UK box, because it is plentyfull and relatively cheap to buy. A good one would leave you with all the necessary donor components for a ppg build and a long 5th gear. To that you you can pick and choose your front and centre diffs at will, afterall you are likely to want to change things, like front diffs etc. But, as Paul says, the ideal donor box, ie needing nothing more than the gear kit, would be from an Sti 5/6 Type RA Limited, but they're like hens teeth! The alternative is to buy an aftermarket ATB (Quaife/Kazz) or plated (Kazz) front diff and at some later date source an uprated centre diff or DCCD

I am not too sure if fancy diffs will make too much difference on a hillclimb; I think using slicks will have a more profound effect on times and provide far more traction/grip coming out of bends.
Driving the thing better also has a marked effect...
The 2 reasons to do this in another box is to have a quick change over (though I think you can do the change very quickly Paul!), and also to allow me to sell the trick trans when I tire of the Sti as I will have the stock trans available.
I hate changing rear diffs anyway so a Jap 4.444 trans as a donar is the way forward.

There is no squat. Might be why the traction at the standing start is weak?
The 3 way adjustment is very effective, but it does take a bit to work-out what is going on in the car over a given surface, but they are very effective.
I think you can run them on a softer bias compared to the 'simpler' AST's of last year.
I think i have some further tweeking to do, but more of a refinement rather than adjustment.

What Trick Diff options are there / what sort of cost - not sure what LSD type diffs my JDM 1994 wagon has ... certainly no front LSD as no traction if one wheels spins in mud/snow! What should I have as std? ( viscous centre ?? only ?)

Graham, im starting to realise now as i get a chance to push my car a bit more that the Helical front LSD i put in my new box has done its bit to add a fair ammount of front end grip to my car. It certainly turns in far better than it did before with an open front diff.

I had a blast the other day on the back roads near where I live, I'm getting used to the hard setup, there is no understeer from the suspension setup , only power understeer. A new front lsd diff will be added to the gearbox package. The left rear still clonks, escpecially when it is unloaded, something not quite right with it. The cornering speeds give an enormous gravity effect

What do you mean by 3-way adjust? Only three damper settings?

No, they are really very very nice, but jumping from a single turn adjuster to 3 to 'integrate' is quite a step, but each of them really do work well.
Remember this is a £2000 set-up, and should be effective.
So far all is well.

Unless you have educated spys at all the bends it is very hard to sort the car out on your own!
The car feels great on road and track now on the same settings, so I will go to Prescott 'as is' and see what happens.
The competition will be very stiff indeed.

My Financial Director was not impressed/convinced.
She wants to save-up for the real thing rather than get bits and bobs over time.
At £360 it was a gift, but lots of 'Daughter's 21' and finishing Uni costs arriving in May....you have this to come.

Enough of the gearbox.
today was practice day at Prescott, and we ended up with 3 runs up the twisty hill.
My Senior Observer, Bigbrakes, was on hand so time for a bit of experimentation.
On the dry run in the morning I ran a 48.74 (pb is 48.09) and for once a decent start @ 2.13 secs.
I had the AST's where I left them after Loton, all seemed well although I had dropped the pressures to 30/28 F/R.
Second run was after a light shower but still a 48.99 @ 2.15 and 28/25 F/R
I had softened the AST's by one click on all 3 settings, and the car felt a bit 'wallowy'.
Sen Advisor has now nailed where I am slower than the EVO....
Third run was during a shower, with the AST's 2 clicks harder at the front than the rear 'softer' setting, pressures the same. Ran a good 50.02 but don't know the start.
Car felt good mind, and the F/R settings are better to the feel of the car on a freshly wetted surface.
Of course, the EVO is here, and a touch faster, but not all THAT quicker. Have I scared him?
