Hurrah! 
You can't play it because you don't have the correct codec installed on your machine that can decode the video file.
Try this handy little thing. Install it and open the avi file with it. It should hopefully tell you then what codec you need to get hold of to play it. It's probably a DivX or XVid codec that you'll need. You can get the divx codec here and probably some others
