Dumb question. Is there anything, other than cost of the parts, stopping someone taking the drivetrain out of a 4x4 911 Turbo and putting it in a Boxster? (Even just the engine, if the 4wd system is too complex?) Or are they totally different powerplants and the mountings are absolutely non-compatible? Just curious.

Depends if you're buying the car for yourself or to attempt to impress others, I would imagine.

Adding a turbo misses the point of this sort of car to me. Each to their own though.

The plan was that I would be one of the first to be delivered, in club sport spec and in speed yellow.

However times change, and I dont have near on £50k for a ring toy. If I did have one, I reckon I could only afford to make 1 or 2 trips per year, and that just wouldn't do!

I've never heard of a modern 911 tt ( ie 993 onwards) being described as having poor throttle response. Is that your justification for not buying a proper Porsche( only joking by the way LOL)

Pretty much sums up why I think they stopped being real Porsches when they started fitting feather light easy to use clutches, power steering, more servo assistance on the brakes and fitting a/c as standard.

Eiether that or i'm stuck in the 80's

Ha, no I'm just a tight b4stard! Seriously though I've driven the 996 turbo and the throttle response fell short of what I'd want in a sports car... ok for a GT i guess, which is what it probably is. Quick just not much fun... bit like a scooby then

Received rather nice brochure last night when I got home, was accompanied by a nice letter asking me for a deposit and that I could expect delivery in November/December.

Current options on my list are:

PASM
Bose
Chrono Pack
Sports Seats, but will have to try these first.

Good points being made here about rarity value etc. This doesn't bother me personally as I've experienced "rare" cars before. I ordered a P1 the day the rumour started and was told they would be limited to 250 cars, then when up to 500, then finally made it to 1,000. I walked away and the dealers struggled like mad to sell them all. A few years later I ordered an M3CSL and had the same experience, which explains why they are cheap as chips at dealers now.

Overall it's a personal thing and the Cayman is right up my street in terms of Manufaturer, looks, price, ability etc. I used to be a regular here when I owned Scoobies and appreciated the "my car's better than that one" discussions as it all comes down to "each is his/her own" and if you like what you have why should you be bothered what anyone else says.

The only real concern regarding financial aspect of the Cayman is the fact it seems to fill a very specialised Niche, like the GT2/GT3/RS
Those cars took a very long time to sell (996 guise and mk2 GT3) and have realised some fairly substantial losses...exclusivity doesn't always mean good residuals..lots of UK 996 GT3 RS around now for £75k on the forecourt, somewhat less on your drive.
It will be a very accomplished track car I am sure, but the days of Porsche cast iron residuals are long gone. I am going to call around the dealers this week for prices on my Boxster..will be interesting to see what hit I am going to take... maybe I'll keep the car.

Only price quoted was for basic car, no option prices so far. May go into Porsche web site later and see what my preferred choices cost on a Boxster and use that as a guide.

Chuck, have seen a few 996 GT3 RS's on forecourts recently and the temptation is there but the older, wiser financial brain says no which is alarming Not too fussed about residuals as I intend to keep the car until I decide if I want a 997 once more of the models are released, looks like 18 months to 2 years currently. also, this may be the last brand new car I buy as I appreciate what you say about residuals and this applies to nearly all cars now.

What are you looking to swap the 987 for ???

I've been bid £39k by a couple dealers for the car, it cost £44k new March 5th, so not as bad as I thought, haven't even lost all the VAT...cool!
Still not 100% convinced I should do it....but you only live once eh?
