Andy when you say the phase 1 inlet is the best to use i.e. flow characteristics

Which of these two would you use?

I was working on my old 911 the other day and thought about this thread...

The flat 6 ( ) engine has one t/b in the center of the engine and feeds two large chambers roughly above each cylinder bank from which 3 even pipes feed the individual cylinders with injectors in the usual place.
Not a turbo engine mind, but maybe food for thought?

that is how the SVX is, but with only 2 cylinders on each bank it screws up the pulse timings, same for the exhaust.

whoop de do

With inlet pulses 180º apart on one side, and 540º apart on the other, the better way is what Andy is doing when they will be 360º apart for each pair.

Erm...there are rather as lot of bits missing from that pic...I'm not entirely sure that the engine as it stands would run...

Graham,

Does a 911 have a flat plane crank?

Subaru flat 6 can be paired left and right banks as that's how the SVX is. As well as the twin TB that andy has, there is a valve that opens the two seperate plenums up as one dependant on RPM.

Paul, no.
The last 911 engine I did the engine had a 'normal' forged steel crank which was a work of art and rang for ever when tapped.
Can't recall the firing order for a 911 now, but could find out easy.

Nothing to report just yet, bit of a change of direction now with an all alloy construction unit. Should be on the car for TOTB after which I'll do a write up

cheers

Great stuff.
Just wondering, there is a pulse flow in the manifold which alters when you create changes to the manifold, do you calculate the length etc to keep this pulsing the same, or isn't it that important for the working of the manifold itself?

Just wondered if you had managed to make any progress amid your attempts at breaking the land speed record

Dont think these questions have been asked but excuse me if i missed it,

How will the idle control work? if you're using either the twin butterfly unit or two of the older throttle housings i assume you'll have to use the old style idle controller? Surely all 4 cylinders will need an equal amount of air for the engine to idle properly, in which case both halves of the manifold will need to be joined via the idle control valve?

Will supplys to the MAP sensor, fuel reg have to be taken from both halves of the mainfold by means of a t-piece or would a feed from one half be ok?

Lastly, will joining the feed to the two throttle housings not effectively make one maifold again? or is it far enough up stream that the scavenging effect will not take place?

Kenny

The throttle body for plan 'A' was a twin unit from an SVX with integral ISCV.
