My arms are killing me I've had to climb on the engine a couple of times to get to bits on the turbo It looks like the original turbo brackets won't fit so I may have to suspend it on the up and down pipes until I can sort something out.

There were a few moment when I could have done with an extra hand - holding the sump with one hand and fitting the pick up with the other!!!

I'm dreading trying out the sump to see if it is leak free... I'm still trying to find out what the capacity is of the MY05- (2.5) oil?

Floyd, i would use the the correct dipstick, just to be on the safe side, together with the dipstick tube.

Congrats on what you have done, tbf the one i did, was on a slighlty modified sump, so it was a tad harder to get off. It does kill your fecking arms though doesnt it?

Steven, I have the correct dipstick but I didn't buy the tube. I need to see a MY05- car to check if the tube is a different length.

More work completed last night. The DP is on but as it was designed around a 6 speed, the 1st bracket wouldn't fit and I had to 'invent' a new bracket to give extra support. I'm not happy with the floating turbo so I'll need to invent at least one more bracket for that too. This won't stop me starting the car though as it's just the TMIC to go back on now (and filling it with oil).

My arms still ache! More pictures to come and some details on clearance issues as well as some mods to the waste gate 'dog bone'...

Thumbs up It's ALIVE....again!

Wierd! My wife joked "is the engine on?" Only a faint burble, so quiet and very smoooooth Very different but I like it.

Plenty of smoke from the turbo as always and anywhere else that got a bit oily. I can't hear any leaks and there doesn't seem to be any from the dreaded sump.

Today I popped out to my local Subaru dealer to take a squizz at the dipstick tube. I'd ordered one just in case before I got there but after seeing it and taking photos, I don't think I'll need it. 4.3 ltrs is the new capacity if you're wondering, which I carefully measured out with laboratory measuring tube (taking into account the filled oil filter (say 0.2-0.3). Incidentally this dealer had sold 13 RB320's and they had also bought the one that was won in a raffle (£20), which only raise £18k for charity

Just the a/r, pads and wheels to go but they can wait.

Pics when I get time.

Thumbs up Trial run

Its as if I'm in a newer more soundproofed car. At idle its just so damn quiet and at slow speed all I can hear is the tyres. Anyway, lots of 'stuff' coming out of the exhaust, which I think is remnants of the cat and oil still burning off bits as they get warm. There's some more work to do on the clearance for some wiring as it's too close for comfort and I need to make some brackets and heat shielding for the turbo. I obviously can't go fast but initial pick up is good (although I have been used to a Skoda diesel for most of the time!).

The manifold:

Default Mods and porting

I can't resist a bit of porting so I cleaned up the ports on the manifold, up pipe, and turbo entry (hot side). Nothing major as I really didn't have the time The waste gate was enlarged as much as I could but I did notice that the dog bone (penny) could leave a gap when closed There is quite a bit of play on it and if moved to one side then it doesn't cover all the hole. I modded this with a bit of welding. There's still play for expansion but now the dog bone is 'helped to cover all the hole:

Whilst I was at it I noticed that the max opening angle could be made greater if the pivot bracket was cut back a bit:

Size: 68.3 KB
I've no idea if the actuator can open this far but I thought it wouldn't hurt if it could. It hasn't weaked the pivot either IMO.

Coolant hose (new) (£15)
Fuel pump 255ltr (unused) (£85)
Sti8 TMIC brackets (£20)

Get that flipping wiring moved, before you drive it anymore. The "oil pipe" is a water feed between the water pump and modene.

Good work Floyd

Yes sir! [Excuse mode] I only drove because I wanted a shake down and also because I couldn't waited [/Excuse mode] I was always going to do 'something' with the wiring as it will melt there.

As for the oil pipe being a water pipe - that's what I meant

F
PS thanks for the interest Steve and a couple of others. There used to be more people who wanted to mod cars once upon a time, but perhaps the new generation of Snetters just pay for it these days Or perhaps twinscroll converstions are too common?

Hi Floyd - Just a few questions that I want to pick off before plunging in.

How did you get around a support bracket for the turbo - the twin scroll has its own version I have heard?
What it DIY design or did you source a Subaru part?
Also was the wg actuator from Turbo Dynamics and at what cost?

Cheers

Steven, yours or a jdm or something else?

Butty, the turbo is supposed to have 2 brackets but I have none. I want to fabricate at least one if time alows this w/e. I have mdae a temporary extra support for the down pipe. The up pipe is 3 bolt flang at the bottom and 4 bolt at the top, so with the two pipes it is quite rigid. There is no flexy bit either. The turbo will be supported as the tack driving that I do will demand it! I didn't ask Subaru if they had one as I didn't think they would.

The actuator is TD and details are in the last couple of pages (I think). Choice of 1bar or 1.2 IIRC.
