George,
I think you might be a bit hasty in your decision. Some of the best drivers around have found the Impreza to be amoungst the safest and forgiving cars around. Its simply a matter of how the car is set up- wheels, tires, suspension set up etc. Indeed maybe the new electronics have bugs which cause dangerous results in the real world, but the cars without them certainly have never been in question.
John F,
Actually the UrQ with Torsen if pushed would go into very slight oversteer, but with the slightest touch of throttle would come right back into line very very progresivly- that was it best trick- I'd say as a master driver and top enthusiast/pro , you really should try one on the road. For certain conditions they might be tops. Indeed the experience might be more like your Impreza Sport but with more stability (less agility) and a turbo. Unfortunatly I had to sell mine that I got over by yourt way in the UK (AM motorcars, due to needing funds for my buisness) I'll find/post a letter from an owner who had both a UrQ and a Impreza and compared them. thanks, JL

I currently own a 20V ur quattro amd have previously owned a 2001 subaru wrx..... in terms of driving dynamics they are both different in that the scooby felt more manoeverable, nervous even whilst the ur feels supremely capable and unflappable.... this is the feeling I got driving both cars but pound for pound the ur for me is/was the car to drive daily..... the torsen diff'd cars do allow a bit more back-end fun but as the previous poster commented all that is required is a bit of opposite lock or removal of the gas.........BUT the speeds at which that happens on these cars is extreme

You've lost me now. I said i like neutral to slight oversteer handling and you sugested at first the Quatro was understeer limited for safety, now you are saying its neutral to slight oversteer limited if you push it, but when you apply power it kills the oversteer (thats what you mean by a slight touch of throttle i take it?). That doesn't make any sense.

John,
"but with the slightest touch of throttle would come right back into line very very progresivly"
Sorry, it should read with slightest lift of throttle. I meant that the car will at first naturally understeer but with a little extra throttle and/or steering input it can oversteer and then go back to neutral. So I suppose the car understeers yes which can be safe, but also has another side to it offering the slightest of oversteering attitute.
GreenMachine,
Indeed I believe with the addtion of the Torsen diff this improved the overall handling of the UrQ quite a bit.
"in terms of driving dynamics they are both different in that the scooby felt more manoeverable, nervous even whilst the ur feels supremely capable and unflappable"
Again my theory is that for some circumstances, such as wet-poor road driving (with obstacles and the like) that extra weight up front if negated with the right 4-wheel drive bias and weight distribution, can work to a drivers advantage if one wants the nose planted longest. Quite frankly I'd love to see a comparison of the best modifed versions of each in Wales with two great drivers aboad and see who is most confident and safe with their speed? JL

Commiserations (sorry can't spell).
I did here recently of someone in a 04 I think, close to where I live who exited a rbt in a 30 limit reasonable and hit diesel, hit a kerb and took out a lighting column completly (I bumped into him in a local within a couple of days and he was still at a loss to explain things!!), plod were at a loss to explain it either. I suppose if it's slippery enough, it doesn't matter how slow you are going, it's going to go! A saultory lesson, as the scooby does realey feel in control.......
