Warning to all 05 STI owners..be careful!!!!
I wrote mine off on Saturday at 35 miles per hour!!!! In a nutshell was going round a right hand corner and the car started to slide having had four scoobies, an EVO then the 05 I did what I thought you were supposed to do and kept the power on.....THEN the AYC kicked in and pulled the car to the right and pushed me up the biggest kerb I have ever seen....and then up another...
Result, roof kinked, chassis bent total write off.. I dont claim to be anything more than an ok driver but I really was just a passenger and it is a bit strange how it happened...?? Put me off no end seeing the damage at such a low speed (airbags didnt go off)..I am not getting another. Be careful out there. |

What do you think you will get now? back to the EVO? |

Cheers people..sorry DCCD same thing though (I think?)
Im gutted I really did like the car, BUT the way it took over has totally put me off a witness thought my foot had stuck on the accelerator..Even the police were sympathetic they could not understan how I ended up where I did... Prodrive. Not sure what to get yet...think Ive had enough of 4wd though! |
Did you steer into the slide?

Did you have the standard semi slick tyres on? was it on a wet road etc... |
Road was damp, not wet was on 18" PFF7S with Michelin tyres...must admit seeing those beautiful wheels in pieces hurt......
|
:cry::(

There are times when this happens to me as well (sti ra) with the diff only fully open setting, it snakes pretty badly under heavy acceration in low gears or wet conditions. I usually switch the dccd up one setting and that seems to prevent it.

George
I am so sorry M8. Gives you an excuse to get an EVO IX though! :D |
George,
Did you hit diesel? I have an 05sti and it does feel at bit twitchy in the wet, but im talking at speed, not 35mph and even then the result is controlable oversteer. I feel very sorry for you and hope that the insurance sorts it all out. Any chance of some pics of the car, I am just curious as to what damage you have caused at such a slow speed. All the best. 6pot. |
Cheers all for the sympathy, much appreciated.
6 Pot dont have any pics unfortunately..as it's a company car I doubt I'll be seeing it again! Could have been diesel but I'm not really sure. Im just glad it didnt happen with my son in the car or when Ive been really pushing the car..I dread to think how much damage would be done at silly speeds. |
you had an sti as a company car ?!?!? wow
|
Very sorry to here of your misfortune mate
Regards John |

Very sorry to hear you have totalled your car, it's a gutting experience, dont let this put you off though, use it as a reminder that we can always learn and go get some skid control training, you will get a lot out of that. |

i gave up the impreza company car route due to the stupid government taxation department :) and bought one instead :D

John, cheers for this..Ive had two skid pan courses, used to race quads and scramblers and grew up on a farm driving bangers on muddy fields! Not saying Im an expert but am used to going sideways...
Just shows you can never be too careful!! |

I have had the same torque steer type thing a couple of times in my WR1.
A nice slide then the car seems to grab back the other way  I never really did understand what was going on just caught the slapper. I provoke power slides in may car every day and usually use Auto. The main problem you have with )% STI`s are the tyres they come on. IMHO I dont think most people can use them safely in our Winter conditions. I would fit some Nero`s or even better some Michelins Pilot 2`s. |
I really want to sort out a skid course, the problem with these high performance motors is that they handle so well, when they do break away, they break away big!
At the end of the day, once you reach the point where you have to lift the power off, you are just like any other rear or front wheel drive car and learning the basics of steering into a skid and controlling a situation can go a lot further that have a load of gizmos to help you drive safely. Someone should organise a Scooby skid day, we could all go on it! |
John, havent only rwd and fwd..maybe I should!
Aaron thats exactley what happened to me...if the kerb wasnt so big the car would be fine..I have thrown the car about plenty of times at far higher speeds and have found it brilliant and very controllable but this time I really was not in control.. Just be careful Just spoken to a mate who prepares WRC Imprezas here in Ireland and he thinks it was the DCCD assuming that as I was turning right and started to slide I wanted power to the wheels that had lost traction and to continue going right which is not at all what I wanted.... I dont know but I do think Subaru should explain exactley how to drive the things before someone else has the same misfortune as me. Theyre making them too bloody clever nowadays. |
I was showing my brother how easy they slide around a rounabout.
I remember being in full rear mode turned in and floored as usual the back came out and as I accelerated as usual it grabbed back over towards the rh kerb then slapped back to the left. It was a close call. It happened the other day again round a roundabout but in auto but didnt grab quite as much. It has only happened the two times and I have no idea why. Mike you must have experienced this sometime any ideas?? Over to Mr Wood............. PS Mike are you down this Sat or busy?? |
Arron, he was on Michelins, not the RE070's. The MY04 WR1 had a diferent setup to the MY05, there is no yaw sensor on the 04 and the front diff is diferent too.
Maybe it would help if you did spend some time playing in an AWD car on a skid pan George. I think its important to kill this myth that in all conditions you should stick the boot in if you are in trouble, it doesnt work like that. You can get out of serious trouble sometimes doing this if thats the right action to take, but it will also land you in a heap of trouble if its not. |
