A small project for 2005
Taking Jolly's failure mode:
The engine is running badly, turn the engine off. Troubled cylinder/piston stops in the cycle somewhere, lets say with both valves closed.
Residual fuel line pressure dumps fuel into the cylinder and has to displace the fumes in the cylinder via the piston ring gaps, ie a slow process even at 3 bar.
You come to turn the engine over to see if it will start.
The starter motor engages and turns the flywheel crank until the piston tries to compress the neat fuel. I would not have though the starter motor would have enough power to bend the rod, but would stall against the hydraulic lock?
I doubt that the engine would fire on a few cylinders either in such a small rotation of the crank available before hydraulic lock?
Anyway, isn't the engine coming out or the car sold now?
Graham.

Also I presume the piston travelling away from the stuck open cylinder would suck fuel through the injector.
As far as I am aware Bryan has understandbly had enough of the car and the wife is far from amused so it is remaining where he last left it at the moment.

Stuck open injector.
All fuel and fumes from when engine turned off will enter cylinder. All fuel when the fuel pump is primed to start the engine, will also enter the cylinder. This could add up to quite a lot i guess.
Based on the gearing, i would say the starter has a lot of torque in it?

The ignition was turned on 3 times, the gauge went to 3 bar and then dropped off almost immediately , we were all looking for fuel leak/ vacuum leaks but found nothing. We were all standing there scratching our heads, I was then asked to turn it over, I guess priming the car 3 times prior to this didn’t help and this is what caused the damage to the rod/s. I will be putting the car back on the road in time as I have gone too for to stop and call it a day, as for the mrs, well, a bit of decorating and odd jobs that I have been meaning to finish for the last year will need to be completed before I spend another penny on the car
but at least I don’t have to sell it.
but at least I don’t have to sell it.
If the O rings round the base of an injector is not seated/sealing properly, then the pressurised fuel in the rail gets squirted straight into the cylinder when the pump is running, and also as soon as the ignition is turned off all pressure in the rail will be lost as it continues to leak out, thats what my money would be on.
Remove the two bolts holding each rail, and ease the rail up from the manifold, turn on ignition and see what happens.

John/Mark:
Is John a hill climber?
I think there is a quick Impreza hill climbing/sprinting in Scotland, an RA maybe.
Goes well at Doune.(I'm told)
We soon should have a Hill climb/drag section for the Competition Licence holders!
Graham.

Hi Mark/Graham, up until last event, going really well, betweed David and I (dual entry),won every sprint, setting new track records at every venue. Learning the hills really, first season I've done them seriously, but having some success with win at Doune and mostly second places behind very quick Cossie. Was under the record at Doune last time out at only my third visit, so more than chuffed with that.
Yes Graham, thats the car, you've been talking to My Twemlow I suspect. You girls really need to come up to Doune in Sept and have a go, it's the only place I get out of a car and not only are my hands shaking, but my legs also.
Ran a big end last time out, I managed to do a flat shift with the dog box, from 2nd to 1st instead of 3rd, 9645rpm on tell tale. Not sure if it was that or just oil surge. New crank on it's way, one rod damaged but repairable, might need to buy a spare 2.5 to keep in the garage
P.S. the above theory is from personal experience, though I got away with it.
Graham, we have conversed breifly before via PM before the begining of the season.

Yes, been talking to Twemlow Senior several times.
As to coming up north to meet you boys it's too far for me!
It also sounds too scarey at Doune according to Mr Twemlow.
So what is the spec of your RA?
2.5/dogbox and all that stuff sounds a bit serious.....
Did AndyF do your car as he said some time ago that he had tuned a fast hillclimb Impreza in Scotland.
I have done the Leders Championship this year which takes in Doune, so perhaps next year I might spread my wings and come and have a go.
Your results sound like you are a natural pot hunter!

Yes, i know..
Seems to me to go hill climbing you need a minimum of £3K each winter to move ahead.
Do you have the car on a trailer or road driven?
I am at a real cross-road with my Sti now.
I want to keep the car on the road so i can drive to the events and back, but willing to do the wheel change when i get there, so full AVON hill climb slicks for next year.
This will bring the transmission to it's knees = ppg kit (there's that £3K!)
The 2.5 will have to wait as my daughter is about to do here final year at Uni so there's another £3K!!
I was just the same with the 911, but £1.5K was the cost then...
Graham.

There is some kind of a National spiders web between you lot as i keep on getting tangled in 'he knows him who did that for them because he goes racing!'
Just how many Impreza's are actually racing out there beyond the millions that rally?
I think I know about 5 hill climbers (inc me) but I've only seen 2 in action (exc me).

You could drive it Graham, but it wouldn't be nice day to day. Won't be anywhere south of the border this year, going to Fintray at the weekend, but I'll be using my road car (UK98 PPP). Maybe not even north either, dropped a Big End the other week, rebuilt engine and something is still amiss so need to strip back down and check (tomorrow).

The amount of cars out there that have bits of my car bolted to them, maybe I should start a thread ' Who bought bits from RB5108' LMAO
I went to barretts today to see my engine in bits and a bent and twisted rod sat there on the bench, I'll post a picture later if I can work out how to get it off my phone and on to the computer. Phil wasn't happy with the condition of the fuel rails (where the injectors fit) so I have spent all afternoon with a dremel polishing the inside and removing all the crap, where's the best place to get NEW injectors that fit directly into my 1.5 rails...?

If you wanna play it safe and get some new ones, get some 22B 440's like what i've got. Either buy them new or get them cleaned & flow tested. I've seen some at flat4online. Can't remember how much they were though?
Just had a look and they do 550's as well. Price for the 440's is £260 & the 550's is £350. Not sure how good a price this is for new injectors? They quite often sell stuff on ebay at a discounted rate as well so you might get luck on there?

John:
Got the Senior/Junior in my class this weekend and a vicious Seirra twin turbo super fantastic on slicks.....
Doune is a bit far at 5 hours + but maybe next year as it is part of the Championship.
Sounds a bit 'hard' for us soft Midlanders
Good luck with the engine!
Graham.
