All I can say is that i'm gutted, the engine needs to come out for a rebuild.
If anybody wants to make me an offer for the car as is, feel free, I know what it owes me failing that it will just sit at Barretts until I feel like having another go, the spec of the car is as follows.
I wont be splitting the car this time as there's no rush to get it of the drive as its parked at barretts.
UK 98 reddish blue 70940
Prodrive alcon brakes
Prodrive suspension
Prodrive quick shift linkage
Piaa driving Lights
Full decatted exhaust
Megan headers wrapped
TD05 FE turbo new covered the 80 odd miles mapping
Uk98 heads fully overhauled
EJ22t CDB
RC uprated oil pump
GGR cam belt
Modified fuel rails
Braided fuel lines with -6 connectors
Sx pressure regulator
In line fuel gauge
New FMIC covered mapping miles
Walbro fuel pump
Prodrive inlet pipe
Modified oil breather system
Oil catch tank
Sti7 wheels with brand new tyres 215/45
Centre pod and boost, oil pressure, oil temp gauges
Link ecu
Lambda link
Knock link
Rear lower strut brace
Sti radiator cap
5.1KG arrows flywheel
Lateral performance organic clutch covered mapping miles
The car cost me £4700, I have spent £4209 on parts and the bill last Friday was £40 short of £3000

OMG, oh no
It's not nice at all to see a project got t1ts up like this after all the hard work. Any of the project guys will know how much hard work it takes to get to this stage and that is just demoralising in the extreme. Take a breather and come back to it later, maybe with a 2.5 bottom end as Graham suggests. You’ve gone to far to give up now.

You might be able to persuade Powerstation to sell you one of the Sti 9 2.0 short engines for less money than a 2.5 put that in for now and rebuild the 2.2 short engine at your leisure...maybe into a strong 2.33

So gutted for you
IIRC this isn't the 1st engine thats gone on you either?
I can so understand why the missus doesn't want you throwing more money at a subaru, or any car for that matter
Considering the price of a 2.5 (or an even cheaper STI8/9 from PS) short block, you could swap one of these in, then recover some costs by selling the 2.2 CDB on?

Have the injectors been checked / tested since to see whether it was injector(s) stuck open or an injector / rail seal issue?
I assume it must be injector as the injector to rail seal was very good before engine was started for first time as fuel pressure remained after pump priming.. unlikely for seal to then fail etc.

Presumeably the injector mechanically seized 'open' hence the massive flood of fuel or the ecu told that injector to hold open for an 'infinite' time?
If the electrical signal is broken then the injector fails closed (don't they?)
Hope you are working hard on the car Mark!
Graham.

Reading the posts before, the cylinder filled with fuel and this was then compressed on the up stroke. Basic physics - liquids can not be compressed hence bent the rod.

If a car were running really rich then it would only be spraying fuel when the engine was running, not when switched off.. therefore it is unlikely to cause the same problem as there would not be enough fuel in one compression stroke to fill the cylinder enough and it would then get pushed out the exhaust on the exhaust stroke etc..
Simon et al
Just how much fuel could get into the cylinder, when the fuel system is at over 3 bar when switched off, if an injector was stuck open?
I estimate a few 10's of mls at most, which should be unlikely to fill the compression volume / squish area etc. and if it was compressed only to a few hundred psi ... so more likely to blow a head gasket than bend a rod?
And anyway as the valves open / close on each cycle, wouldn't some / most of the fuel be sent out the valve holes as they opened if they were pressurised?
