Hmmm you learn something new everyday. I don't suppose you could explain why its needed with maf based Ecu's?? I always thought since it went into the inlet pipe it wouldn't make a difference with a breater filter stuck on the end.

Sorry for the hijack. Great thread

Simon at Roger Clark said the same just, as his tube for me was a V5 and we talked of blanking this and filtering that, but if you run a MAF (I will on mine using an Apexi FC) then you need to keep the stock system for function.
Typical of RC, they have sourced the right part now for the Sti v3/MAF/TD05 20g FE, they are a good company.
Hope to get it tomorrow so i can fit and get the inlet done, headers on (spraypaint's arrived for the wrapping), TD05 on and get the basics back together.
What a lark, but I'm realy enjoying the thread too; the wealth of knowledge out there is very interesting.
Roll on the weekend!
Graham

Think i will be heading out to the garage later tonight. I was meant to do more yesterday but have a bad neck @ the moment.

Oh got a mail from Crawford for the 2.2 block shipped with arp studs and the correct gaskets $4700-5100USD depending on how quick i wanted it.

with current predictions for an exchange rate of possibly $2.3 -> £1 around feb/march I would say thats how quick you should want it!

I agree with Graham, great thread, a few of us seem to be at the same mods/knowledge stage together, well, just a few days behind G so we can all learn from his attempts

I removed my bonnet mini scoop today, went back to OE vent with blanking plate.
noticed a slight increase in MAF voltage (approx +0.015v) and 1.0 increase in knock count/background noise (out of 100).
Im afraid to admit it, but I sniped the samco inlet (after you turned it down G), so will be waiting on my modified fuel rail, braided hoses and -6 fittings before having the inlet manifold off.
Questions...
Do I stump up for an StiV/VI manifold or simply have my own one painted?
Do I take the opportunity to replace the head gasket?
Should I fit ARP head studs when refitting?
Do I need JIC(?) fittings for the braided hose ends?

Peanuts:
No probs on the Samco, Roger Clark have done the business.
The paint comes off.
I had API fit studs for 'insurance'...glad I did now with 1.5 bar ahead!
Ask Alyn at AS Performance about the fittings.

Off to the Garage.
Graham.

It doesn't go into the inlet pipe.... it goes out of it. The ISCV takes additional air from the inlet bypassing the throttle when the throttle is closed... so it idles nicely (needs more air than a closed throttle can flow). So the MAF reads the additional air flowing past it. If the ISCV just took the air from atmos the MAF wouldn't read this and wouldn't fuel correctly so the car just stalls.

Easy way to check is take the pipe off the inlet and block the hole. Start the car and see if it idles. It will start fine and probably fast idle for a while before stalling.

Tony.

P.s i think that's about right anyway.

Progress at last!

Had a realy good afternoon in the 'Scooby Den'. Sent the wife and daughter to Roger Clarke's for the demon inlet, and got all focused on the actions!

The wrapped manifold went on first, took a bit of persuading (no hammers this time) but looks a treat from a rabbit's view!

And then the up-pipe/turbo into place:

It is now you get to realise just how big the TD05 20g is as EVERY nut and bolt is a sqeeeeze/tight fit/bast@ard job!
After a lot of messing, especially the oil feed pipe banjo bolts just who in Subaru put them there...the blower is in place at last and all bolted up

OK, garage floor now starting to clear!
Juat at this time the Team arrived back with the Most Expensive hose I have ever bought, and I started back on the manifold.

I finally took the hacksaw to the pipes, and did the Real Thing and cut everything away, and fitted the pipes/Tees as you can see:

I'm pleased with the parallel system now. The demon inlet dropped in next:

Here's that TD again

Ok, enough excitment for one afternoon, a bottle of Red awaits...
Inlet on the engine tomorrow, but I am tempted to vent the oil breathers to a modified Carbon Canister now it is redundant...anyone done that yet?
Where (Halfords?) can I get 15mm ID tube from??

With a bit of luck I will have the manifold back on, SX fpr in and tubed-up, the header tank in place (that turbo actuator looks to be in the wrong place) all by sunday evening.

What a lark.

Graham.

Looking good Graham. Did you have to grind some of the gearbox casing away to clear the water pipes?? Just asking, as I had to, but can't remember reading that you needed to??

I'm just curious if all cars need it done when fitting these TD05/06's ?

Pickle, I think it's a phase 2 thing.

Graham, 1 small point, I would put a bit of lockwire on the heatwrap at the collector end of the headers, I found that after a while the long loops of wrap around the collector and the 4 pipes had become a little loose and started sliding over each other - IYSWIM. When I had my GruppeS headers off to port them () I straightened it all out and put some lockwire on and it's not moved since.

I had put it on pretty tight the first time but I assume the expansion and contraction of the pipe work had stretched the wrap a bit, I had no problems in the places where the wrap only goes around 1 pipe.

Mark: That 911 looks good, and familiar also....but they can look the same! I know where there is a real hill climb spec 911 turbo with 500+ bhp for 20K.......
Impreza + my 911 = 500bhp turbo....temptation

Andrew, thanks, but with you already, lost in the detail is the wrap around the 4 to 1 section does have stainless wire binding, honest. I used this technique elsewhere on the headers/uppipe. I don't want to do it all again.

Back to the garage now to do the top of the engine. Can't find any breather hose yet (Halfords are crap) so that will have to wait. Bought a bike clear drinking bottle and snap-in holder for £2.99 to replace the carbon canister. This will be to take the engine breather tube.

Cool, I saw it on the uppipe but not on the headers.

Garden hose will do for breathers until you source some proper pipe, in fact large Garden Centers or somewhere like B&Q Warehouse might have some reinforced pipe anyway.

Today has been the day the Impreza fought back...
If I were to do this lot again I would DEFINITLY take the engine out, put it on the stand and thn everything realy would be easy!
Let that be a lesson.

Eventually got all the inlet together and ready for the engine, but something kept on stoppoing me from seating it all down properly.
Turned out to be the fuel line to the replacement connection block for the old fpr.
It clashed with the body of the turbo and everything had to come off again and stretch the fuel line to fit around the turbo.

If you are eagle-eyed you will see how close/interfering the block is to the turbo. The actuator is already a pain!

The second issue was the fancy inlet pipe and getting it onto the turbo, but some mighty shoving and swearing eventually got it onto the turbo, talk about tight.
If I ever get to taking this turbo off, it will be to sell the car

Tomorrow will be a tidy-up of the wires/pipes and fitting the SX fpr (in a new location), alond with delivering the TMIC for welding.
The light is ON at the end of the tunnel!

Graham.

I think you'll find there are a fair number of high power Imprezas out there with the offside turbo bracket missing.

Looking good though!

Good points.

I found I had 'shaved' the O ring on the fpr substitute block....

What pressure should I set the SX reg to? (to best test at reasonable operating pressure.)

Easy to forget the basics!

I made 3 brackets yesterday to best mount the SX fpr, and then found a better position!

Weekend was cut short by several bizzar events, including A+E on sunday night!
Also included some serious chat about building a hill climb Smart car with a Mega bbooooosssstterrr bike engine....

When I'm not too embarased with my SX bracketry and the TMIC is back from the welders will post some more diy pics.

P20: Thanks for the info, fingers crossed, rags at the ready.

Like the idea of building the Smart..... The fastest 700cc tin top?
