Im going to have a go , just a couple of little things to finish. Do I just turn up, pay the entry fee and were off, no clothing, helmets etc? How many runs do you get?

just turn up and pay, you'll need a helmet though and maybe a long sleeved top (other places require it, not sure elvington do though) and as many runs as you want

Nope.
Part of the 'pass-out' deal is to take the wife to York, nice hotel sat night, and Elvington sunday.
More serious reason is the insurance on the car is 3000 miles a year, and I don't have the miles in reserve till renewal!

Still more, all you big bhp/big capacity guy will blow me away, and my ego is too big for that!!

See you there in disguise so you will tell me all your secrets.

Surley the insurance isn't that strict, a couple of hundred over won't matter. They can't expect you to plan your trips down to the last mile!

You must have done a good 500miles off road / uninsured.. surely that would counter balance? and the total is road miles?

Have you got a cheap policy, so restricts you to 3k miles? My own competition policy has 6k road miles, but I suppose I could have made it 8k without too much of an increase to the policy.

Danny

How are you finding the ppg gearset re; noise, gearchange feel and the new diff?

I'd be interested in what you have to say after a few weeks of ownership, Im trying to source the donor box (ty754) at the moment

Yes im a few weeks down the line now and quite a few more miles but not much of a chance to really give it some proper stick in the twisties.

Noise wise, it does whine a bit in 1st to 4th with 3rd being the noiseyest, but im getting quite used to it, sort of compliments the turbo whine when you start to press on.
The car definatley seems to pick up a bit better due to the ever so slightly shorter gearing and i feel this has been complimented by the lighter flywheel giving it a bit more urgency still.

Shift quality is totaly the same as normal as the PPG kit uses most of the standard syncro parts, the only parts of the syncromesh that are made by PPG are the syncro teeth that are actually attached to the side of the new cogs.

As for the front diff i would say that its the most difficult part to judge, im sure that the front end is less 'understeery' than it was and it likes to bite into a corner a bit more, but i dont really do enough of that sort of on the edge driving to give a quantative comparison.

All in all its been fun doing and i have learnt alot about gearboxes in the process. Hopefully i now have a bullet proof transmission to enjoy and abuse

Roll on the FMIC, 550's, Motec and a big grin on my face

Anybody that wants to have a listen / chat i will be abusing it at elvington on the 9th.

Thoughts about engines: (nothing like forward planning...)

Take one CDB 2 liter./crank/Sti v3 heads

What can you do to it to build a big torque engine?

1
2.2 = a good boring bar down the existing liners: yes?
With a 20g/FMIC etc I would expect a 400 lbft engine?
Cost?

2
2.33 with all the machining needed.

Thoughts?

To make a 2.2 from a 2 litre closed deck block the original liners have to be bored out and then replaced with larger bore top hat liners, usually this results in the gudgeon pin access hole being romoved so assembly is a bit more fiddly.

400 lbft should be acheivable with a 20g, just about.

Cost for a built long engine with quality parts around 4k to 4.5k + your original engine to scavenge parts from (like the oil cooler, water pump, sump, oil pick up, pulleys, sensors etc)

As the 2.2 plus the extra for the more specialised parts and machining so add another 500 quid or so

Then you have the heads to go play with...

Hmmm.
There are 2 x 2 litre CDB short engines on eb@y with cranks etc, but maybe a simple 2.5 with forged pistons is the best simple way to go after all (and after the gearbox+ slicks)

2.5, Thats going to need a dogbox, all that shifting to keep the revs up, also a quaife ATB front diff to make it go to where you point it, the g/box you will be looking for is a TY754 out of a 99/00 uk turbo, will see you at Prescott.

I'd be tempted to go down the 2.5 route, save the money to buy another set of heads etc. Then quick swap the engines over and sell your STi3 engine as a lump

Mark A said that.....
Be good to see you there John as I will have a job for you.

Observing the tech side of the start; I need someone there who knows what goes on.
I've got David at Harewood now too, so Team Loaksey Motorsport gets bigger!
Pay is cr@p, just a coffee.

Just a gearbox in preparation for a 5 speed semi helical sysnchro 'conversion' using Zen gears.
I'm chasing down a complete P1 trans working condition with dccd all complete.
It will have the open front diff (I think) but the dccd etc.

What other parts do i need for the dccd, loom i know and the wheel but I dont really need the dash do I?

David: Do you have a donar v5/6 box complete (maybe without dccd) for the right $$$?

Going to bid on the P1 but i think i will loose it.

Wife not impressed....

Graham.

Remember this is just me gathering the parts so if the box pops then I'm half way towards a rapid repair.
