A bloody good driver! he raced in the race of champions and won
And more importantly, knocked Shumacher out in one of the earlier rounds This spoilt the French crowd's hope for the Schumacher/Loeb final.
Interesting how, after the organisers put on the Scumacher vs Loeb race to cheer the crowd up, whoever it was on Grandstand (I forget) said how "that just proves schumacher is the best in the world".

As for the "deliberately driving the WR1 badly meaning it must be Jonathon Palmer" theory - sorry, but get real!

Last series it was Perry Mason, this year it was originally Ben Collins ( http://www.bencollinsracing.com/ ) and now I believe it is a variety of people.

You will note Ben also featured a few weeks back racing the evo wrc against the grassboarder guy.

He's a top guy and a friend of a friend, he did a stint in my mates GT race team, Embassy Racing at Thruxton to replace Paula Cook, and came from the back take 2nd.

I dont understand why it needs to be an Renault F1 driver.....after all didnt Tiff drive a Ferrair F1 car when they were testing it on Topgear against the F50....?

Didnt Martin Brundle recently drive a F1 car in London?

Sound like driving a scoobie is a fine art that escapes professional drivers?

Need some clarification?

Why were the old cars driven on old tyres (tyre technology from that era) and brakes. Surely Tyres alone have a bit impact ont he performance of the car....?

so not really a fair test now.

The whole point of the test was to test the old with the new. ie use the same technology of that era with what is currently available.

Only have to wait a few decades before we can experience F1 performance on the roads!! If the green loby don't get their way that is.....

I have to say though that was one of Top Gears best episodes though. Thorougly enjoyed it. That buzzing in the Ferrari, (Italian build quality!!) must have drove Clarkson absolutely mad, so much so he taped the wipers to the windscreen, muppet!

I'd heard that the 'old' black suited stig was this perry mcarthy chap, and the the current one was Damon Hill. Someone here at work must been watching more closely that me as he said this morning that the stig usually wears OMP gloves, but on the F1 car was wearing Alpinestars and also had a different crash helmet.

I'd heard the old stig was 'removed' after he damaged a rather expensive sportscar they had been allowed to drive for one episode.

Cant believe some of you guys missed the point so much !!! There is no point getting a 20 yr old car then upgrading it is there ? It is meant to show how far cars have come on in 20 years - so they need to have them as close to original as possible including tyres etc. And as for using a Scooby !!!!!!!! When do u think they started rallying them ? 1990's....

Wonder how well Kovalainen would do against Scumacher in an F1 car though?

In an F1 car or in an identical ferrari??

I think we'll find out sooner rather than later as he is the new flavour of the month with the F1 team bosses.

My thoughts are on it being tiff, he has been let lose with f1 cars before, he drove in lemans, he works mainly for prodrive as a demo/instructor driver (didn't know that till a week ago) so has to be said he can drive more or less anything out there. Stig is to small to be damon hill, maybe jonny h. In fact scratch that it wont be tiff he works one fith gear on 5. Thats my idea out the window lmao.

i feel a lets camp out at the track situation comming on!!

its gonna be a driver with experiance in multiple types if cars, so yur guess is as good as mine!

if anyone does find out post it up as soon as lol

They should have used an S4 to compare against the old Quattro, rather than the Evo 8 - although it would have been interesting to see how McRae's championship car from 95 compared against a new STI PPP.

I thought putting the Evo against the Audi was a bit off, suspension and tyres have improved greatly in the last 20 years, not to mention brakes.

Did like the Evo v Bob run though, all I can say is Petter better watch his back, his brother certainly can drive. Would make for an intresting WRC

Quality! Well done fella - I haven't laughed so much for ages. The thought of that genteel old man (who's probably been dead for 20 years or so now) nailing cars round the test track just did it for me.

Cheers

Its unlikely to be a 'successful' driver in the accepted sense; remember that it was Peregrine McCarthy before and he spent over 15 years not quite making it.

My Uncles a professional racing driver and he has a Simpson Super Bandit; then again so do I and I never post during Top Gear.....

Err - wasn't that kind of the point of the feature?

Stig isn't necessarily a "never quite made it", could easily be an ex top driver like Damon - I won't call him a "has been", in case it offends someone!
