John Peel has died suddenly on holiday :(
I like John Peel. He always seemed to make what ever he was presenting weather it be on radio or tv interesting. I remember listening to his show a few years ago when he did a feature about vinyl records, a format he was very fond of. He gave the listeners a tour around his house going through his collection, and said when he found an original vinyl release of an album he had he'd give the cd to his kids!. I doubt the next Glastonbury will be the same as he usually presents and interviews bands for the tv footage.
I was still a regular listener till the BBC moved his show to start at 11 instead of 10pm
I did a couple of Peel sessions in the 70s when I was in a punk band. I still can't believe that he won't be there any more on Tues, Wed, and Thurs evenings
He is completely irreplacable.

Most nights during the 80,s i used listen to peely
as you say, i think he introduced most of us to alternative music that in all honesty non of us would have gone out and bought on the fly so to speak,
i will have to dig out some of my 80,s tapes to see what i have of him around..
zymox & hardcore are a couple of tracks i seem to recall quite well

His radio show shaped a large part of my listening preferences in the mid 70's and early 80's...and still continues to do so today.
Gone but never, ever forgotten. RIP John, you did better than good.

just caught up with the news of his passing; didn't realise he was still broadcasting as I remember him from the breakthrough days of the mid '60's on the radio pirate ships - and if memory serves me right he was with Radio Caroline broadcasting the 'Perfumed Garden' radio show from about 10pm onwards.
He was a real antidote to the mid-Atlantic accents of the other DJ's (think Tony Blackburn, Dave Lee Travis, Johnny Walker...) and the bubble gum pop played during the day.
Listened to John Peel for the latest 'underground sounds'; could never quite pick whether his presentation style was cultivated - just to be different, but as it didn't change over the decades, then I guess what you heard is what he was.
RIP
