John Peel has died suddenly on holiday :(
That is sad news indeed.
When I used to work/live over in Suffolk I used to know John quite well. I would see him down the pub and would have a chat about music and I'd tell him how crap Liverpool (FC) was and he would try and tell me how good "The Fall" was. When he did the late night show (I worked shifts) I used to call him and tell how crap the current track he was playing was and we would have a natter for a few minutes.
Genuine nice chap, great sense of humour and never treated others like they were lower than him becuase he was a celeb.
I for one, will miss him.

I like many others on here have probably grown up listening to John on his radio 1 show, back in the 80's he would be on most nights and I would like to thank him for introducing me to so much music, of which I am still addicted to 20+ years later, I love my music

If it wasnt for him I doubt I'd have the collection I have today and we wouldn't have radio stations like Xfm thats for sure, we'd all be listening to Capital and Heart type stations playing pap.
John Peel was The Man, a Legend.

He was liked by every music genre as well.
There is a happy hardcore/rave track by CLSM - John peel (is not enough) which just about summed up his radio shows from the ravers point of view.

Man, what a shame...best radio voice ever, and the fact he was still working for Radio 1 showed his genuine love of all types of music and the respect everyone had for him....funny guy too....gutted
It's hard to say something that hasn't been said already when you're on page 3..... I wonder how many other people feel as though someone that they knew has died?
John Peel left an answer phone message for a aquaintance of mine, thanking him for placing his daughter on a door list. We were so exited; we recorded it onto a DAT tape and saved it! ... and listened to it over and over: 'John Peel for f*ck's sake! John Peel'.
What a loss, for broadcasting and for music. I feel as though someone I know has died.

I remember calling round a mates house when I used to do sound mixing for their band, and John Peel was playing in the background... Next thing we hear his dulcit tones mention our town (Burton On Trent) and Paul (the mate) slapped play and record on the tape deck and we got to hear John Peel intro' the record the guys had just produced and PLAY IT.
and he liked it...
We all just sat there looking stunned at each other.. "John Peel, that was John Peel.. talking about US!"
Good night.
Great, great shame that he has passed....

At 6pm Radio 1 are playing a selection of JP's favourite music. So far they've done a great job of doing a mawkish, terrible tribute throughout the afternoon. The man himself would have wanted non of it.
Although playing "Teenage Kicks" by the Undertones 4 times that I've heard so far has to be a good move

Peel was my hero. And no, I'm not taking the ****. He did things the way he wanted, enjoyed himself enormously, loved his family, and outlasted all the "popular" Radio 1 types.
A genuinely great man, and one who made me realise that you didn't have to be confrontational to be non-conformist.

Nonconformist. That has been me, throughout my considerably long life (I'm 42, now), and it's because of him, and the music he brought to me from 1976 onwards. I truly would have been a completely different person, I think, without him. I was in tears this afternoon, at the news.
I agree as with everyone else that it is truly sad news.
That depends how you look at it really. The man had achieved an enormous amount of things in his time and although he has passed earlier than you would expect he has got an awful lot to be proud of. My wife was killed last year at the age of 20. She never got the chance to live her life. Life is more fragile and precious than a lot of people realise.

Sad news indeed. I remember his Festive 50s all too well from when I was at school and he was a Joy Division fan so we all felt we identified with him.
I seem to remember seeing a programme about him a few years ago now where he said he wanted The Undertones' 'Teenage Kicks' played at his funeral. If he was serious I hope he gets his wish as it would be so 'John Peel'.

I always listen to Mayo on 5Live when driving home from work today he dedicated his programme to John Peel, lots of people phoning in paying tribute, Dj's, rock stars and the general public alike some great stories, the man was loved and respected by all.
Anyway Mayo signs off with Teenage Kicks, I dont think I have ever had 5Live that loud in my life, even the Sub kicked in on MW !!
, it reminded me of listening to his show all those years ago under the bed cloths with my little MW/LW radio and earpiece hoping my mum wouldn't catch me, busted many a time!!
We were saying at work how we loved his opinions at Glasto, sitting there in his wellies
It is still incredible to think he has passed
a unique man leaving a void that cannot be filled.

I wonder what he would have made of it, he was so humble and self depricating, I suspect he would have been extremely embarassed , made light of it and played another record.
Its more of a tribute that in the past three pages that there hasnt been one snidey comment.
