Gutted if this is true, as he's had loads of guest presenters on recently I was saying to my girlfriend how great it will be to have him back on and what a dearth of decent music there will be on Radio 1 when he goes.

It won't be recreational mourning on my part, I'll have a real sense of loss as this person has entertained me on a regular basis since I was a child. Perhaps I won't be grieving but something good *will* have gone from my life.

Well that's a rather unpleasant start to the day. John was one of the stalwarts of Radio 1, and to be honest about the only decent presenter IMHO.
A sad loss for music lovers everywhere.

John Peel was great on the radio because of the variety of music he played. Was also a nice chap in real life.
My wife did here PGCE at Bradford Uni a few years back, and on the graduation day John Peel was there being made a Doctor of letters or something similar - his speech was funny, entertaining and also inspirational. He talked at length about his life, his wife and his family - a truly decent man.

I never met John Peel, but I'll certainly be paying my respects to him in my own way. I used to listen to his radio shows religously when I was a kid. He flew in the face of all the other rubbish being played on the radio at that time. I went out and bought so many LPs on the back of hearing a track played on his shows, even tracking down some fairly obscure stuff. A true champion of lesser-know bands and less popular music, and a truly nice, sincere bloke as well. What a sad loss.
Sod off, clown.

Flamin heck - still remember his Christmas top 50's from late 70's when he had to put the Pistols 'God Save the Queen' into a hall of fame on it's own because the beeb wouldn't play it. From the punk era his show was legendary.
