DVCAM is pro, mini dv is consumer. But once you make the leap it starts to get all abit pricey!
I was under the impression that the BBC used Sony VX2000 3CCD consumer camcorders for quite a lot of "video diary" type stuff???? ie, when someone is given a camcorder to use in their own personal home....????

[of course, this was a few years back - I guess things have moved on, and this Sony DVCAM model seems quite near in price to the VX2000]

Thumbs up

Yeah they have been for quite some time, also very good camera's. Think they have a newer model out now though. But the pdx10 is cheaper, and uses the 'better'* quaility of dvcam. It's also nice and compact, and is not shoulder mounted. DVCAM is more of the industry standard when it comes to 'semi' pro, and most editing houses will insist on it. I know mine did, so I had no choice but to move up

As soon as you get to that price range it's all much of a muchness, untill you step up to the next level.

Sony PD170 is a beast! But the D50 is where the actions at. Just need to re-morgage Lets not even start on the Betacam stuff!

*He's some boring stuff about DVCAM:

The DVCAM format is the professional extension of the worldwide standard DV format. The DVCAM format uses 8-bit digital component recording with a 5:1 compression ratio and a sampling rate of 4:2:0. The unique compression algorithm provides excellent picture quality and superb multi-generation performance.
The DVCAM format has a wider track pitch of 15 µm (compared with 10 µm for the DV format) which gives higher reliability for professional editing.
It also offers superior digital audio performance, providing a wide dynamic range and excellent signal-to-noise ratio, comparable to CD quality. Alternative audio channel modes can be selected: a two-channel mode with 48 kHz/16-bit recording or a four-channel mode with 32 kHz/12-bit recording.

Dave have you found any problem with noise? Looked into one of these but they apparently (according to typical internet witchhunts ) had a bit of tape noise - so we ended up getting a 700i, which is lower spec than yours. Coudn't find one to try 'cos the deal on the 630i is fantastic. Amazing camera for that money.

You bought a bullet cam yet?

"Apparently" noise from the tape motors. I thought it'd be something typically blown out of all proportion but couldn't see/use one to make sure, so erred on the side of caution with the 700i.

Borrowed a bullet cam setup, so we're all ready to go Porsche baiting
