It could have been much much worse...

I don't see anything in my post recommending that we deliberately run over the pedestrians, country roads or not! Can't imagine why you passed that remark.
When you are driving slowly through a town trying not to have an accident and a pedestrian steps off the curb with his back to you to cross the road or just to walk along it for his own convenience right into the path of your car then I think you are entitled to feel a bit irritated at his total lack of sense or responsibility for that matter!
Road safety in these kinds of circumstances is a two way affair.
Do you really have to be told by numbers whether a particular child is at an age to understand pedestrian safety or not?

Blimey not read this thread until now. Not a nice thing to witness. A guy at work was first on scene at a fatal accident in Northampton last week - not something you would wish on your worst enemy (I'll spare you the details but open top car and passenger probably not wearing seatbelt = nasty).
The kid sounds like he was very lucky - nothing much the driver of the Focus could have done by the sound of it. As was said earlier, thankfully it wasn't the X5, I doubt he would have been so lucky.
The bull bar 4x4 thing is utterly pointless and unnecessary. I think I'm right in saying that 4x4 vehicles are officially classed as 'off road vehicles' and as such do not have to conform to such strict impact regulations as normal cars. This has a big impact (literally) if you are unfortunate enough to be involved in a head on collission, as the additional ride height often means that the 4x4 will ride over the top of the car safety cell, right into your lap. OK if you are driving the 4x4 - not so good if you are in the car. Pedrestrian safety is also affected. There is an awful lot of bodywork to hit on a 4x4, so the impact on the pedrestrian is likely to be a lot worse than a car travelling at the same speed. Facts lost or forgotten by most 4x4 drivers when on the road.

I don't see anything in my post suggesting that you did recommend that we deliberately run over pedestrians!
What I'm saying is that if someone ran over a pedestrian and claimed right of way as part of their defence then it would be dismissed out of hand. i.e. pedestrians do have right of way.

Well I live out in the sticks I am glad to say and I do a fair bit of walking on small roads with no pavement. Yes pedestrians do of course have a right to walk along such roads and I would expect a car driver to slow down if necessary for safety as well as good manners and also the pedestrians should be prepared to give the car driver the room he needs to pass.
My intended point was that it is wrong for pedestrians to walk out into the road without being sure that it is safe to do so and not just to rely on the car driver to avoid them at the last moment. They too have a responsibility for their own safety.
Hope that clears it all up.

Having recently put this to the test, i can categorically say that when bouncing down a tarmac road at 30-40mph it hurts.
This action is not advisable, and should be avoided at all costs
